Yea you right. Though if you hit the brakes hard with a heavy load they can start lunging forward-back and push you.. I hate em. Electric Brakes for the win. Brake lines on my dad's truck got pinched(overloaded move cross country) and he used the electric brakes on the trailer to stop, instead of crashing if he only had surge brakes.

I've seen your truck there. You guys just did some warranty work on my Taco to fix a cross threaded bolt into my intake manifold. I live less than a mile from there, are you in sales?

 

Yeah, it's a hydraulic brake system, kinda weird, the hitch thing moves , when you apply brake in tow vehicle it apply brake to trailer..
Need a new master cylinder, has a shock in it..

 

Yes, surge brake
You see the master cyl that the hitch pushes and pulls, as you slow the trailer "surges" into the tow vehicle which pushes master cyl and applies brakes to the wheels that have them (hopefully all 4 ? ) when they are working right they work reasonably well
Problem is. Nobody bothers to maintain them and they go to shit
Finding he correct parts may be an issue too
Converting to electric brake is an option, figure ~$125 per wheel for loaded backing plate and drum and bearings and seals.
Might wanna see what condition things are in and decide from there
Surge brakes and a weight distributing hitch don't play well together FYI
