As title says, i'm replacing my inner cv boots as one is ripped and the other is about to.

I've gotten one cv shaft out, and the snap ring removed from the tip but the tripod joint will not come off. I've been using lots of PB blaster, tried using a brass punch at the base to get it loose and still nothing.

Anyone have any tips or tricks to get it off??

Press, or make a jig with a large bench vise.

ended up pulling the head off a brass hammer i had and using it to pound the tripod off, and then back on once i put the new boot on.

Clamp the shaft with whatever you have available and then use a brass drift punch and hammer it off. Pretty sure this is actually the method advocated in the FSM.

Edit: Oops, saw the issue was resolved

by any chance does any one know the measurements and or parts number for the tripod bearings? I have to replace both inner CV tripod bearings. On both of them one bearing popped off them. Please any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks men and women.

Im encountering the same exact problem. So essentially you just kept beating it with more force and brass punch? The lip of the tripod at the point of contact is starting to make some micro dents so I wasnt sure if I should keep going

Yup, brass punch, be brave. A standard triangle file fixes any errors later.

I’d find a tube with an ID slightly larger than the OD of the axle shaft, weld some “wings to it, then use a shop press and push the axle off the tripod.

I know it’s an old thread but in case anyone runs into this problem in the future…I was able to remove the driver side axle tripod with a punch and hammer. The passenger side was not coming off so I rented a 3 jaw puller at oreillys and that did the trick!

If you’re rebooting both ends of the axle, slide the tripod boot on from the cv joint end while that’s off.
