Almost all new bikes are nice and used ones are usually decent too in your price range. Best bike is one that feels good to you when you ride it so I suggest riding before buying. All have opinions on what bike is great and those opinions are mostly just. Look for something with a fork that has rebound and some type of compression adjustment. Just try several and don't settle for the first one, unless after several, it stands out, then go back and get it.

the other bike I have my eye on is a giant talon2 which I've had the chance to ride and like but there are no scott bikes available for me to check out so I probably will end up with the giant. Found one on craigslist for about $100 less than new and a year older so I probably will go with new. I know I should be patient but I just want to get out and get some riding time in.

Its still worth checking out. I have a Turner Sultan thats a Large and with a short stem, I love that thing. It just feels good to ride. I also have a Turner Czar in Medium and it feels almost on the verge of being too small for me.... Im only 5'7". I prefer larger sizes though.

Trek has goofy sizing, I have a stache and mine seems small. My size sticker says it's a 17.5 virtual 16.5, but mine is a few years older.

I bet that 18.5 would be close to perfect for me. My Rumblefish is like a 17 or so and it feels a little too compact. I am 5'9" on a good day but I have short legs and a longer torso. A nice, short stem would shorten it up a little.

I was in the market for a cheapo hardtail at the start of this year and picked up a Commencal Meta HT for about $1200 CAD at the time (2016 Essential Model w/ Dropper). The sale prices seem to come and go, they're priced higher right now than they were earlier in the year. It climbs awesome and is real fun on the downs due to the fairly aggressive geometry of the bike and the 160mm fork.

Give them a look, they're a great bargain.

What MTB helmets are some of you using (non-full face)?

Everyone has a different head and every helmet fits different. I have a Fox, Kali and Bell. Bell fits best for me but it was the most expensive too. decent helmets are 50-150 bucks.

Me and many friends use different models of the Bell Super. It's been great and I have no desire to find something else.

Bell Super 2 here, and I have the chin guard for the occasional bike park use. I have an older Bell with lights mounted for night use. Bell and Fox seem to fit my head the best, but everyone is different.

I would definitely go to your lbs and try on some different helmets. Different manufacturers have different shapes and sizing. My road bike helmet is a Giro but my mountain bike helmet is a Kali. It was just what fit my head the best.

The local bike stores in town for me don't have full face helmets, aside from Academy Sports and they only have mediums (I have a big ass head). Any full face helmet recommendations? Don't want to spend 300$ on one, but are the Bell ones on Amazon for like 65$ even worth getting?

I'm rocking the bell super. I would buy it again. I'd look at the giro montaro or chronicle and any of the POC helmets.

I use the POC cortex flow which is a pretty sweet helmet and is good for multiple impacts(as long as it doesn't become damaged). You can find it on sale for about $130. I've got a pretty big head and it fits well with solid ventilation.

I replaced my Santa Cruz Superlight with a 27.5+ Hardtail Sonder Transmitter sold by Alpkit in England.... Could not be more impressed with the bike for the money! 27.5+ tires combined with the slack geometry and SRAM 1x11 drivetrain makes for a great all-round fun bike. I have a trip to the bike park and 120 miles of twisty singletrack on it in the last 4 weeks and it has been awesome! Highly recommend the tubeless 27.5+ setup to those who haven't tried it!

I'm looking at unloading my FS and going back to a HT, and commencal is on my short list of bikes. You get some serious bang for your buck.
