I have looked at the aux battery install locations and while they seem to "work" they seem to be OK at best. This will make this my first winch equipped vehicle and I think I know the answer but I am going to ask the question anyway... is the "need" for an auxillay battery only for increased winching time? Depending on load, will the winch pull the "main" down that fast?

You should be fine off your main. But what I would do is get a bigger rated battery in terms of amp hours.
