My Tacoma came with these wheel weights. They rust and look awful. Is this standard equipment? Everyone who looks at my tires asks why they would put these things on.

Most reputable tire shops put the weights on the inside edge of the rim...

Seriously, take it to a good tire shop, have them re-balanced with the weights on the inner edge of the rim, or that will permanently stain your rims!

Weights go on the inside and the outside for proper balancing. Since lead is a no no, iron based weights are now used. When iron oxidizes, you get iron oxide (rust). In wet/ salty environs they rust pretty bad. Go have them rebalanced with new weights.

    Problem solved.

Some shops use weights that stick to the rim with double sided tape.

The problem with sticky weights where outside weights are suppose to be used is they sometimes hit brake calipers. The proper way to balance those wheels is hammer on weights on the outside and inside. If there is no outside lip then sticky weights are used and hammer on weights. If there is no inside or outside edge then just sticky weights are used. If you want sticky weights on the inside where hammer on weights are suppose to be used your going to have to request that. The tech is not a mind reader. He balanced the wheel the proper way. He did his job. Deal with it

    Request coated wheel weights.

Hondas come with them, and I actually thought Toyotas did too.

Suspect yours have been replaced (rebalanced) or the coating is corroded away.

What year is your truck, are you the 1st owner, have you replaced the tires or rebalanced the wheels?

It's a 2014 with 12,000 miles on it. I bought it new. The dealership in this area are well known as bad guys. They have a stranglehold on the market so they don't give a damn. Not bitching, well known opinion by folks around here.

Well, I'd have the tires rebalanced by an independent or tire shop that uses/will supply coated wheel weights.

When I bought my 1-owner 05 with 119k miles the stock wheels had never had a weight mounted on the outside and were in mint condition. I assumed the owner always requested the weights not get mounted on the outside. Otherwise they will always pound them on the outside ESPECIALLY on factory wheels.

Weights on the outside ruin the finish on the wheel. I have always had my tires re-balanced and the weights put on the inside. I have been doing this for 20 years. Even on my 74 Vette I had the weights put on the inside. I am finding out the manufacturers are starting to put the weights on the inside.

all trd sports i've seen (I looked at new ones in 2012) have weights like that, but they were coated. I always request stick on weights, because like you, I live in Nova Scotia as well and it doesn't take long to ruin a set of wheels. Even the coated hammer on weights will wear on the wheels clear coat and they'll start to corrode around the weight itself.

Where in NS are you? I'm in the hub

I live in Cape Breton on the Mira River. Guess I'd better have them all replaced before there's anymore damage.

I don't mind wheel weights on outside and inside, it will balance better that way. But I sometimes have them use stick-on weights because the weights on the outside lip get scraped off on rocks. I have lifetime balance and rotate with my tires so I just take it in when that happens, but it's still kind of a pain.
