It's not a bad thing if you plan to mod your drivetrain and dump thousands of dollars into regearing it to get some semblance of normal performance out of it.

Why didn't you build it so it can telescope farther?

I ran 33s and 35s on my 08 FJC, it had 3.73s..I never regeared. It was totally ok with 33s but was a bit of a dog with 35s, looked cool though... I would have regeared it but I sold it and modded a 4runner..

My Land Cruiser 100 series has 4.11s stock ( I think) it is a dog with stock tires.. Ihave 295s on it and it is even more of a dog..

I don't know what my '16 Taco has for gears, I should but meh.. what is the point.. I put 285s on it and it seems good. I would love a set of 35s to run but I am guessing I am gonna need to do the body mount chop, like I did on the FJC and regear.. I don't really do rock crawling all that much anyway, just a few desert trips per year.

Lots of guys I know with 80 series Land Cruisers go with 4.88s when bumping up to 35s, for Toyotas that seems to be a bit of a standard mod.

I have no issues with 33's and stock gears. In fact, it runs better, shifts earlier instead of trying to lug it to save gas. Gas mileage is the same, but I am running 255s.

Sorry, not an engineer! I'd bet the R&D guys decided saving ~2 inches of steel per part that most people will never need would cut costs.

So a 255 on the same rim as a 285 would be in greater need of regearing since it has a larger diameter? I legitimately don't know, so please don't shoot!

Tried to tag Smitty... but it looks like he's on vacation...

To add to that, this is helpful for visualizing the different sizes:

I saw the owner get in the truck. He looks exactly like you would expect him to look.

    Affirmatory.

I guess what I meant was in reference to load rating, overall weight, etc.

Like... just because it has a larger diameter doesn't necessarily mean it's got more rotational weight?

These gearing conversations are making my head spin. I need tires soon and stuck between 265/75/16, 255/85/16 and 285/75/16 on OEM OR wheels.

Clearance shouldn't be an issue, 3" lift and 1" wheel spacers. Lots of room in the fenders now.

Just worried about gearing, I want to avoid having to re-gear.

1" spacers may cause rubbing where there wasn't before. Proceed with caution.

Your gearing will probably be fine. Unless you're running 35"+ tires, it's not something you need to seriously worry about. Or if you're trying to build an "expo rig" and plan on running close to gvwr or towing something big all the time.

Make it simple - get the tires you want, see if you can live with the ride. Yes? You're done. No? Change your tires or drop some serious cash on a regear.
