Well I moved to SD on a whim and it's biting me in the ass so I'm looking to extend my job search to my fellow friends of TW.

I graduated last year with a degree of Intelligence Analysis with a concentration of competitive business intel (fancy words for Integrated Science and technology sorta deal) from James Madison University. Following graduation I traveled the US for almost exactly a year creating content living off grid and out of a sprinter van for a few brands in the Outdoor Industry. My contracts expired and I moved to Southern California looking to start a career with no connections. I did a programming bootcamp to get more in depth studies of Ruby/Rails but mainly for the connections.

    Skills:
Ruby/Rails, HTML, CSS, JS, MongoDB, AngularJS, PHP, Git/Github, Postgres, Cordova, Ionic and touched on a few others.

Most of my skills are junior and some mid. I'm currently interning for free (unsustainably) using MEAN stack, Cordova and Ionic to build a A/R app/website similar to Strava.

I'm looking for any opportunities before I have to pack things up and move back to VA so any help would be awesome. I've scoured Indeed, LinkedIN, Glassdoor, recruiters and companies in SD. Do any of you have contacts or leads? I'll happily meet up for a beer (my treat) just to extend connections and so I'm not some rando off a forum.

Yeah it's way more tough than I had anticipated. I've tried staffing before with zero luck but I'll give those two a shot. I saw a position at General Atomics I actually qualified for and plan on applying tonight for it.

I've heard it's hard to get in but once you're in you're in... just didn't realize it'd be this hard, ha!

There are PLENTY of software engineer jobs here in SD, especially a ton of mod-sized startups that are hiring (as well as larger startups like Classy.org downtown). That being said. I used to work for a game studio here called Trion Worlds for 3 years and then the company shut down the SD location so I left and went to Intuit. Google and Amazon both have satellite offices in SD now around Sorrento Valley and Solana Beach respectively. They're about 100 employees at each the last time I visited.

Intuit is right off the 56 so it's easily accessible and you avoid a ton of traffic as compared to other places. They're one of the bigger tech companies in SD right behind Qualcomm and a few of the private sector military companies. The SD location has over 3,000 employees and they're constantly hiring software engineers with your skills. While I was at Intuit for 3 years, I did full-stack with a focus on front-end. Most of the stacks there are Java-based but some of the newer teams are using Node. Of course, Python with the DevOps groups. The pay at Intuit is also extremely well (upper 10% of ), the work/balance is the best (except during tax season), and the campus is beyond amazing (chefs that cook whatever you want, gym, walking paths around the campus, and so forth).

I don't really have any connections there anymore since I left about a year ago voluntarily but like I said they hire a ton of software engineers of all levels; I was a mid/senior-level engineer and was salaried at just about $65/hour. (I was on smaller teams and was the lead front-end engineer usually and also oversaw several employees under me). I left because I wanted an easy job where I didn't have to do as much shit as I did at Intit so I can go offroading more and work on side projects ..while getting the same salary as my Intuit pay. So I've been at my current company for just about 9 months doing exactly that.

And to end on that note, I'd like to shamelessly plug my web app (scales down to mobile) that I've been working on for about the past month. It's a build management tool for our trucks. It's called Buildprint and I developed it on a LEMP stack through Docker containers with some Vue on the front-end. The link is below.

get a recruiter, they don't cost you anything as the employer who eventually hires you pays. I probably get a message a day on linkedin for web dev positions (all from recruiters of course). I might have some recruiters you can talk to if interested.

If you wouldn't mind passing them along that'd be nice. I have an interview Monday for a job not involving software development just to get something to pay the bills. It's a 4.8 on glassdoor but business development and minimum wage internship. I'd love to get my foot in the door and move into their software roles but unsure they'll let me or not.

I just had a recruiter call and leave a message asking if I was interested in a position. I can call back and give them your info since usually when I decline they always ask if I know anyone interested. You and I seem to possess the same skills (Except I don't know ruby) so you could be a good fit. PM me your email

Will check into that this weekend. On a side note does anyone have good documentation on React on Rails projects?

This is such an interesting place to be talking about software development. LOL

I'm at work slacking off and trying NOT to think about software but here I am...
