I have sprayed plast-dip on my chrome mirrors a couple times now and it just is not holding up. I have used it on emblems etc with no issue but on the chrome it lasts a few months then starts to peel when washing. One of them peeled so bad, I now have one black mirror and one chrome mirror.

I followed all of the standard direction on applying it including put it on in several light coats but it just won't last more than a couple months on that surface.

I HATE the look of chrome mirrors (others are welcome to their opinion but mine won't change) so wondering what other options there are for getting rid of the chrome.

Do I just need to just spend the money and have them item sprayed with bedliner, or painted black/color matched to truck. Does paint stick to the chrome ok or will I be dealing with the same issue in the future.

Or would the best option simply be to find some black mirrors and swap them out?

My truck is a limited so they are power mirrors. Is there a quality black powered mirror that anyone can recommend?

I guess you just need some black housings for your power mirror guts to swap into. Someone is prob. willing to swap if you advertise. I had to look at my avatar to even see what mine had so I sure wouldn't care. Just too far away.

You need to use alcohol to clean off any polish or wax from the chrome before application of the plastidip

You can also do a top coat with rattle can after the plasti dip to make it last

all the power mirrors were black housings other than the Limited's chrome. If you can find a part out or even at the scrapyards it would probably save time.

as far as painting over the chrome you should be able to scuff it with Brillo pads or 300 grit sandpaper. use good primer or adhesion promoter since it's plastic and then you can paint it whatever.

then someone put the chrome ones on there. Even the SR5 color-matched editions had black housings

the package included chrome door handles, chrome mirror housings, chrome grill, and chrome rear bumper (but weirdly a color-matched front bumper piece, other than white, green, or gold as those were not color-matched)

    yep..
Why not go for a more permanent fix? Sand the surface well, use a self etching primer, and then 5 coats of satin/semi-gloss black paint.

Don't ruin the chrome if you haven't already. Someone will want them.

Just buy black housings (used or new) and swap over your mirrors, then sell your chrome housings.

Or post in the WTB forum for a swap.

If you've already ruined them by sanding/scuffing, just do a better job of prep and paint them with bedliner. It can be bought in a rattle can at lots of places.

They are not scratched. I will likely clean up the housings and sell them/swap them and replace w black.

Wju, those look good. I like the flat black look and don't want anything gloss black. How is the fit? Do they vibrate, make any noice compared to the OEM ones? I know some of the aftermarket ones have some issues with that based on some research.

I'm sure they are OEM. Might have been a special option requested by dealer. Wouldn't be the first time something different came up :)

The rustoleum product has not held up. Keeps cracking. I am going to try plasti dip.

If you are sure you want to get rid of that chrome crap, sand and prep it properly, then throw like 5 coats of plastic dip, or even some rattle can bed liner stuff.
