I am from Edinburg, which is a city 30 miles east. Harlingen is close to south padre island, great fishing and great food there. Harlingen has hot and humid weather. Great Mexican food. Coming from cali you will prolly experience some culture shock but people are nice. If you know Spanish it will definitely help. There is some drug and human trafficking crime throughout the Rio Grande Valley but while I lived in Edinburg I only saw that stuff in the news. The border is approximately a hour south. I hear it's unsafe to go to Mexico, I haven't been since around 2004ish. But my girlfriends family goes all the time.

Let me know if you have any questions man. I'd be happy to help.

Definitely not like California but if you can adapt then you should have no problems.

Yes definitely "stay away from entering Mexico"!....and don't even think about just hanging around, this side (U.S.) of the boarder towns cause you'll only be asking for trouble, whether your looking for it or not.

South Padre Island is "only the best beach in Texas"! Believe me that's the best that your going to find if you like spending your time at the beach, forget about looking else where in Texas for a nicer beach cause you won't find it (regardless of whatever anyone else may say). Good fishing on the beach, dock, harbor or deep sea, your choice.

Yes speaking Spanish helps but heck that's just about anywhere in the U.S. nowadays. Closest major U.S. metropolitan cities will be north of you, San Antonio or Houston but be prepared for at least a 4 to 4.5 hour drive to get to either one.

Lastly, if your not used to hot & sizzily 99+ degree weather for the majority part of the year then I'd recommend not to move down there. In the summer time it's definitely not like Cali weather, it doesn't cool down in the evenings, it stays hot.

But like I said in the beginning, if you can adapt then you can make it down there.

    Good Luck on y'all's decision.
