As a private party you can not ship USPS. USPS only takes handguns dealer to dealer (FFLS). Rifles and non functioning guns a totally different case. You can however ship FedEx or UPS. Yes it can go from you to the FFL and back to you since it's for work or repair.

Now if you have an FFL that won't charge you anything to ship it for you USPS flat rate is darn cheap!

Usps won't know that you're shipping a firearm if you don't tell them.

Well except they x ray packages periodically. Have fun getting it back if your gun is the random one. You can ship to me however you're comfortable but I ship back FedEx.

Assuming you're not an FFL, you send it to an FFL, such as @SFSMedic ,via UPS or FEDEX overnight. The outside of the package should not indicate the contents.

If @SFSMedic wants to sent it to me, as another FFL, we can use USPS, which means that if tht package gets lost we can tell the ATF to take it up with the USPS, then step back.

A customer brought me a S&W 1911 to do several things too, one of them being a Bomar Rear Adjustable sight. The Bomar requires a lot of machining to fit which is normally no problem. However in this case it was a problem. The Bomar is machined down .100”, the problem was the SW1911 OEM sight was machined down .150”. There were two solutions, go with a different rear sight or do a Dutchman to allow the Bomar to work. He opted for the Dutchman. The Dutchman would replace the material that was already removed allowing me to then do the proper machining for the Bomar rear sight.

I started by machining the dovetail making it just a square cut away.

    8D7D34B0-35EF-44DF-A0B3-4DE2DCCA0F3D.jpg

Then I took some stainless bar stock and machined it perfectly square to fit the cut away, I left .005” clearance to add in silver solder around the block.

    6ECCAFED-1D87-4C28-94E5-ED361FE4B172.jpg

Once it fit I then did some cleaning up to take as much excess material off to minimize re shaping after it was silver soldered in place. And lastly silver soldered it in place.

    03028146-F08B-4B4C-8F57-34244C539C72.jpg
Then it was time to clean it all up and reshape everything to the slide.

    3A6C3837-0A50-4C03-9954-221CDFBCF851.jpg

Once that was done I cleaned it all up with 120 then 240 grit and bead blasted it. Now I get to machine most of that away just so I can install a Bomar Read Adjustable sight for the customer.

Just need to drill and tap for the elevation screw, clearance cut for the windage screw, clean up all machining marks and deburr.

Ok so I want to get a 1911 but I don't want to spend a lot of money because it's my first one and I want to get use to the platform. What do you recommend as far as reliability and able to upgrade down the road? My budget is probably around 400-500.

I'm looking for a beater first to get used to the platform. I don't mind a decent gun. Not looking for a Kimber or La Baer.

I'd save 3-400 more and invest in a good piece. 1911s are awesome, you might end up not liking it but I doubt it.
