Dont really want to give up my 2015 Sport 2wd thats close to being payed off. Looking for a little more off road capabilities like sand, mud. Im currently going to upgrade my suspension to ome's and 2" aal. I already have A/T tires. Would adding a Detroit True Trac be worth it for what im looking for? Or is it the same as my auto lsd button

I understand a 4x4 or off road tacoma is better for this but if i want to keep what i have what are my options.

The truetrac is much better than the auto LSD and will add traction, it is the best bet short of a locker. I've run them in previous Toyota trucks. While the auto LSD is helpful, it is a system that responds to an already slipping wheel and tries to brake it to limit the spin as the open diff will direct power to the wheel with least traction. The trueurac will seamlessly apply power to both wheels and not have to react after traction has been lost. I wish you could have the truetrac and the locker on these trucks. The only drawback of the truetrac is that if you get into a situation where one wheel is in the air, the ability to transfer power is lost, however your auto LSD would then work with the truetrac to transfer power to the wheel with traction.

Will it be enough really depends on what kind of mud you get into. Keep in mind airing down your tires creates a wider footprint which will help you in both mud and sand.

I had a 92 Ramcharger and put a true trac in back. I don't know if it was wheel base, design of the rig with the extra SUV weight, wider track width or what, but that rig would wheel the crap out and above in 2wd over my Tacoma in 4wd any given day.
I should have never sold that rig.
I'm going the same route in my Tacoma, true trac in back and hopefully some type of e-locker in front.
Maybe I can get the Tacoma to get wheeling closer to the Ramcharger. Never had any ill effects with the true trac. I like em.

I've heard the TRUTRAC is not good in snow, not sure if it's true or not.

So your running sport or sr5 then? And a 4x4? This gives me some great confidence in keeping my current setup rather then buying a new truck already equiped.

Running a DCLB 4x4 sport with the factory limited slip. On the Tacoma I have a canopy top, hi-lift, axe and shovel, Engel fridge, 2 jerry cans, tools and fluids all for extra weight and still crap in comparison offroad. Had rear end shop go through the tacos rear LSD clutch packs and they are good.

After having the Ramcharger wheel so great for 15yrs, maybe I expect more out of the Tacoma. But as the family grew into 4 doors and needing more room in back along with the following and being a Toyota, the Tacoma seemed the next best choice.
I thought going more modern with all the computer help now, the wheeling would improve.
Like I said 2wd in the RC with the true trac was way better than my stock Tacoma in 4wd. Steeper climbs, better in the rock gardens, went through deeper snow, hookup on pavement in the rain and any on road felt great. No clicks, no wheel hops, no chirps around corners or anything I'll. Nothing also to ware out like a LSD.

People say the full Detroit is super dangerous on ice and snow. I call bullshit. I have had two of them in rigs and never had a problem. One was an early bronco one was a TJ unlimited. No worries on snow. Ice required some driving as it will kick sideways. No worse than any other short wheelbase rig and actually better and more predictable than one with an open diff.

I heard the same and have driven a full locked rear on icey switch back roads here in BC not cool always wanting to push you around on slight off camber.
Learned to take my time and aways kind of shit but did it.
Once I had the true trac driving was actually fun. I could slide it where I wanted, let off and easy on the gas no icey off camber dog tracking with back end wanting to come around, always felt in full control.

Any quality drivetrain shop should be able to install it with no issues.
