[SOLVED] Howling noise between 35-45

Glad you figured it out and posted afterwards. It's hard to troubleshoot a problem or give advice on a forum because someone always wants to be a troll about it. I tried to give advice a long time ago but of course the advice was not apprieciated by some what's funny is this individual is Now....yeah

 

I am not sure if you are talking about me or the Shakerhood ?

 

My 17 only has Zerks for the Front Driveshaft also, I think they switched at the end of 16 Model Year.

This is what is causing the howl when feathering the throttle or is this something else? If it is just a function of air hitting the frame, I don't see why it's such a big deal.

 

No, the howl is from the pinion angle in the rear differential. This is another howl caused by air through the frame holes.

 

The A Arms make a Whistling Sound that has been corrected by installing some plugs, the Howling Rear Diff is a totally different issue.

 

Good evening Kamille, Since you have a 2017 Taco it really dosen't apply. I have a 2017 Off Road and the noise has been alleviated. There seems to be some holes in the lower part of the frame that caused a howling noise-sort of like blowing on a harmonica but with a different sound. You are okay and do not need to be concerened. If only my howl could be fixed by a few plugs.... Like many others, mine came plugged from the factory (February 2017 build date for me).

 

Mine was built in March 2017 in Texas and my Lower A Arms came plugged from the Factory too.

 

Mine was march 2017 in Mexico; not plugged.

 

Mine was May 2017 also in Mexico. Plugged on both sides!

 

Yes, I checked my 2017 (built May 2017 in San Antonio) and there are only three holes and one is plugged.

 

I wonder then if the 16 ujoints with zirks fit 17s?

 

Had my '17 in for 30k service yesterday. Gave them the TSB, and told them to replace the ones I installed from Lowes with the factory correct plugs. They didn't know what I was talking about, but did what I asked.

 

The TSB isn't in the dealership system to pop up when they search for bulletins related to 3rd gen tacos. But once you give them the TSB number, they were very accommodating.

 

My '18 has this sound but I have yet to go under to see if there are any plugs...are the plugs added from the factory or dealer for '18s at this point?

 

The Front A Arm Whistle has been taken care of for some time, my 2017 came with the Lower A Arms Plugged.

 

I have an ‘18 and don’t have the whistle from the front end. I’ll try to remember to check mine tomorrow to see if I have the plugs, but I am pretty sure I do. Like shakerhood said I think they all come with them now. Maybe one or two fell out of yours? Or you could be hearing the rear diff howl?

 

My truck had 2 plugs in each lower arm from the factory, built Sept 2017 in Baja.

I think some people have reported 3 plugs in each arm from the factory.

Strangely enough, on two different days last Fall, both times while traveling eastbound on an uphill grade at approx. 40 mph into a strong headwind on sunny days I heard the howl/whistle or ocarina flute-like sound very loudly for a few seconds. My wife looked over at me and immediately said “what is that?” as she heard it.

I plugged the additional A-arm holes and drilled smaller 1/8 inch holes into the center of them so that water might possibly drain out. In some years it rains about 270 days or more here.

I’m not really too concerned about rust in there as I’m sure the arms will be fine for many years, even if rusty, but I sprayed some rust paint up in the holes as best I could prior to plugging them up, just for the heck of it.

I’ve heard no more howling since placement of the additional plugs.
