I recently bought an 01 Sr5 extcab. The previous owner told me that it had 6 inches of lift on it, and that there were 35 inch tires on it, which I believe is not the case, on looking at the tires, they are 33 inch nitto terra grapplers, but I can't figure out how much lift is on it right now. Handling is pretty rough, and it has real problems getting up to speed, and when climbing hills. I would like to know how much lift is on it right now, and if I should keep what I have, or if I can make it ride better with something different, or take it back to stock height. My main use for this truck other than a daily driver will be a hunting rig, so I will be using it quite a bit on unimproved roads in the mountains.

Pics of suspension and the truck would help.

Gotta post pics, if it is indeed a 6" it's likely a drop bracket lift or (hopefully not) a body lift combo of sorts

These pics are all from the rear, the shocks in the front are black, maybe stock?

Drop bracket lift in the front? with big ass blocks in the rear...I bet that rides tough lol. You definitely want to get rid of those blocks in the rear and put in a leaf pack to provide the lift, or ditch the blocks to bring the rear back to stock height. The stock leaf pack might be tired and worn out though.

If that is a drop bracket lift in the front, I think you'd need to have a new cross member put in because DB lifts usually require cutting out the cross member if I'm not mistaken.

How can I tell if it is a drop bracket lift?

Better pics of the front suspension would help but someone that knows DB lifts better than I do should be able to point it out with the pics you posted, just give it a little bit and I think someone will confirm.

The shocks are BDS and BDS makes DB lifts so that's what makes me lean in the direction

Definitely a drop bracket kit you can see where the alignment cams use to go and also the spacer on top on the coilovers.

How much expense am I looking at to get all of this taken off, and possibly a new lift kit installed?

unfortunately like mentioned earlier the drop bracket lifts remove your cross member so you'd have to source a new one and have it welded in to go back to a 'normal' lift. The rear should be easy, just remove those blocks and get the right sized leaf pack for the lift you want. And the right length shocks to accommodate if those socks are worn out

BDS is one of the better lifts if you want a 6" lift. Looks to me like the front is riding on the bumpstops...that could be a major source of the rough ride. Generally speaking, a drop bracket lift will not cause a harsh ride.
Good pics of the front shocks/coilovers would help a lot in diagnosing the rough ride.

I feel like that needs to be attached somewhere.

It appears so. I got back under it, and on the other side, it is bolted via a bracket to the axle. On the drivers side, though there is no bracket, and I don't see where a bracket would go there either.
