After quite a bit of disappointment with my 2016 Tacoma I just traded it in for a 2006 SR5 4.7 4x4. It has only been a day, but I can honestly say I am extremely happy with the decision. First 4Runner and I wish I would've done it sooner!IMG_0244.jpg

Nice choice, but what made you want to move to an older platform? Was the 3.5 that bad?

I had the 2.7 which I really liked to be honest, it was a combination of things. Mostly the transmission, the computer controlled power delivery almost got me in a few accidents. It would always hesitate if you gave it "too much" gas into a turn which is necessary in pulling into traffic so instead it would just roll you slowly out there with no power at all then suddenly give it back (actually happened on a left turn into the dealers parking lot when I traded it in) Wind noise was horrible and right next to my left ear, seats were not the most comfortable. Backfire on start almost every other day was odd, transmission flare from 2nd-3rd that jumped between 500-1000 rpm "normal" by Toyota scared me a little.

Overall I had an 02 tundra with the 4.7 before the Tacoma which I loved, but it was having some issues. At that point in time I needed a truck that was going to work no matter what and reliably drive me long distances almost every day. I do not need that anymore, also the 4.7 with 4x4 will make launching a boat a little less sketchy. New 4Runners are also out of my budget...

Ah, that makes sense. That's a huge upgrade.

Old 4Runners with the V8 are better than the new 4runners anyway. :)

I'm worried about the driving feel of the new Tacoma as well. Although I am looking at the 3.5 V6. I hope I can find a place to rent one for a few days to see if I can drive it daily.

    I wish Tacoma's had the 4.7 V8 from the previous generation 4Runner.

    Nice looking 4Runner!

Thanks! I test drove the 3.5 and the 2.7 when I purchased it and decided the 2.7 would be perfectly adequate for my needs which it was. I also was unsure of the 3.5 reliability wise. I would definitely recommend driving one for an extended period of time, through break in I loved it and thought it was great as I didn't take it on the highway all that much or get on it. After break in started using more of the power band and highway travel and realized there were some issues. Figured the transmission was just learning which improved a little, but never enough for me to enjoy driving it. Biggest one for me was the power cutting out on take off, when pulling out into traffic it causes a few oh sh*t moments... Which would get part of the way into traffic then just stall for a few seconds which feel like minutes till it finally gives power back. Also, if you have longer legs keep in mind the seats do not adjust up and down which can be uncomfortable on longer trips.

My buddy has a 2017 TRD Off Road he leased around 4-5 months after I got mine and is sorta happy with it, but plans on getting something else after the lease is up. I have owned multiple brands and models of cars and I was least satisfied with the Tacoma, which is unfortunate because I have borrowed my Uncles 2014 Tacoma with the 4.0 a few times and loved it. I also have two buddies with 1st Gen Tacomas one a 2.7 and the other a 3.4 which are both great.

Did you get a decent trade in value for your Tacoma? I’ve been looking into it, but feel like I’ll get hosed.

Trade in was exactly the highest KBB amount, also traded down so I didn't have to pay tax. I'm not sure how good trade in would be elsewhere as I traded in at a Honda dealer where the owner is a long time family friend. Which is why my family has owned mostly hondas for cars and SUV's. I didn't even argue price, he gave me what I thought was a pretty solid deal on both my truck and the 4Runner.

Wow I thought they fixed the tranny issues after the software update. I really wanted a new Taco but could not stand the 3.5. The old 4.0 in the 4runner just feels right. Proven engine/tranny combo is great, MPG compared to new Taco not so much lol.

Tried a couple 4.0 4Runner's and it was nice, but not near as good as the 4.7. Really missed it from the Tundra I had. Computer says I'm averaging 17.9 in the city so far which has to be incorrect, but MPG's aren't my biggest concern.

I traded in my 08 Tacoma sport for a 2016 4Runner. I test drove the Tacoma, and decided the only way I'd buy one is in manual because of the engine. My 08 was a stick as well. In the end, I couldn't get the extended cab in stick, only the 4door sb. So I went with a 2016 runner cause if I had to drive an auto, I wanted a proven platform. Not sorry at all. But I do miss my old truck. I never realized how perfect it was until I let it go.

Good choice! My wife's ride is an 07 4Runner 4.7 we got new. Just tripped 100k on a 10 hour family road trip a couple weeks ago. It's a beast on the highway. Set the cruise on 85 and relax.
