I'd go right to J&T outside Seattle. They're the parent company that owns Nitro. I'd figure that since they make the gears, they'd be one of the best to handle the installation.

Thanks. I'll give them a call to get an install quote. In the meanwhile, I am just stare at these.

For anyone looking for install shops on the PDX area - Dan’s gears, Six States distributors and NW Auto accessories all do a great job without breaking the bank.

Just got off the phone with Dan. He is slowing down due to back problems and did not offer to take on the job of re-gearing. Six States seems to be ready and prices okay but not great.

I have a set of stock 4.30 gears and pinions out of my manual. 15K miles on them. $500 plus shipping.

    4.30 right?

    Also that’s a great deal.

Are the rumors about second gen 8" gears true about fitting in the TRD Sport Autos?

It’s not a rumor. The non E-locker V6 AT trucks all have the 8” differential.

I now live in an area with 80MPH interstates, and the drive-ability/mileage issues with 33s is becoming much more apparent. I would say 90-95% of the time it stays in 4th gear cruising. Mileage is around 14, a rude awakening from the 20+ on stock tires and 65MPH speed limits.

I have a TRD Sport V6 AT. It sounds like lots of guys are running Nitro without issue, but if given a choice I would rather do Yukon since they seem to have a better repertoire. So it seems like I have options for the rear end since it is apparently the same as the second gens, but what about the front end?

I got a quote from what I believe is a reputable shop and its about $1250 in labor and $1300 in parts. This was for Nitro gears. They were straightforward with me and said they haven't done a third gen Tacoma yet but do a lot of jeeps and Toyotas.

If my main objective is to improve mileage and drive-ability, is this my best bet? I have entertained the idea of lockers in the past, am I foolish to save it for later? I have always loved the idea of onboard air, is it worth it or should I just do an e-locker or LSD? How much redundant work is involved if I decided to do it later?

It seems like this particular motor/tranny combo is especially unkind to big tires. It's like the stock gearing with stock gearing is almost too tall, not to mention big tires. Combine that with the lack of torque down low, and you will pay dearly for anything other than stock. I am hoping with gears and CAI (flame on, I know) that I might get close to 20 again. We shall see.

I didn't really see significant improvement on the highway unfortunately. It just loves 4th gear.
