Alright guys need some input please. I want to get a set of Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx tires. I don't know if I should get 255/80/17 or 285/70/17. About an inch difference in width. I mainly do road driving, little offroad, I want something good for rain and snow. Can you give me pros and cons or preference? Pictures are also very welcomed. Thank you in advance

No problem. There are plenty of advocates on here for the tall skinnies, just not me.

    I have had both 285/75R16...

    IMG_2559.jpg

    And I now have 255/80R17...

    IMG_0267.jpg

I would have to say that I like the ride better with the 255s. Gas mileage sucks either way. 285s were awesome in the winter and off road. I have not taken the 255s off road, and to be honest probably won't. Just do not have the time to get out much, and it's my DD so I don't need to bang it up.

Have not had the 255s in the snow yet, but I am sure I will get plenty of opportunities to in a few months!

Something to consider with the 255s though - there are only two tires out there that are options, so finding a spare is RARE. I am currently using an old 285/75R16, but I will likely just call a tow truck, or plug it myself with a plug kit in worst case scenario...anyway just something to consider.

255s still get my vote though!

    Good luck deciding!

Toyo at2 and RT are now in 255/80 as well, but can’t get the deal through DT!

I like the 285 better than 255, just due to looks.

I too am going from Dura to Ridge, can’t wait to get them on, ready for some piece and quiet!

It depends on how much off-roading you are going to do. If you are mostly on pavement you may want to go with the C load rating as they will be lighter and ride better.
