So I test drove the 2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 and I noticed when I pressed on the gas it had a really slow and laggy response. I also noticed it would switch from either 3rd to 4th going around 45 mph and it couldn't decide on a gear. Do you guys think this is a serious issue I should be worried about and do you think the 2018 Taco will have the same issues?

Engine and transmission is trash in terms of feel and response.

I think it's a serious issue you should be worried about. But it's normal.

On a stock vehicle, ECT mode has a better feel. With ECT off, the 2018's will likely feel identical... since Toyota thinks this is "normal".

I observed something similar, perhaps not quite as pronounced, on my test drive as well. I've now had my OR for five days and I really only notice it coming out of a turn when driving uphill. Maybe I'm just getting used to it.

This is NOT a mechanical limitation. It's how the engine has been tuned for MPGs/emissions/safety. There are solutions to this on TW... I no longer have this lag

Hmm that's so weird they think it's normal. It wasn't a deal breaker for me, but I kept thinking how odd it felt after I left the dealership.

this is true, fully validated just go spend a few hundred hours browsing the OVTune threads.

seriously though, you can fix this with no warranty concerns. it's in the threads.

it's not weird. it's Toyota liable for meeting nutcase emission standards. they need to meet those standards, that's a priority over how your truck's throttle and power respond. the weirdness on this motor has a lot to do with using a common engine platform across models and using software tuning to adapt the hardware. it's great for their profits and horrible for your driving.

It's not the emission standards, it's the method how Toyota decided to meet those standards that is the issue. There are other ways to increase mpg's aside from using the Tacoma engine/transmission and tuning combo.

Please note I don't want to start a flame war but you don't hear people complaining about the tuning of the GM twins or some full sized pick ups who get similar or better mpg's. You just hear them complaining about other stuff on their trucks :D

Toyota is just trying to make the driving experience so horrible that people will be ready to accept giving over driver control to autonomous vehicles.

    Also emissions...

Also the constant struggle between the world continuously producing better idiots, and the engineering department making machines more idiot proof...a vicious cycle.

Seriously though, if you are at all entertaining the option of buying a MT vs AT, I would highly suggest it. Some of the strange power delivery is due to throttle maps, but the AT folks really seem to have the majority of the trouble. In other words, the transmission calibration seems to be the biggest problem.

Find something you like and buy it. That's why we encourage you to test drive.

You either like it or you don't but if you don't like it and buy it anyway, don't bitch about it here and expect any sympathy.

No brainier - get the MT. Better gear ratio and solves pretty much all the complaints about the 3rd gen. I enjoy driving the truck!

    read the OV Tune thread..

also this truck is similar in speed (1/4 mile) to the first gen Ford Raptor. I'm not making that up. Google the numbers.

If you want slow go drive a 1992 with the 3vz in it!!

I did have to search that to confirm. I'm really surprised.

And really, if we're looking at drag strip stuff, the 2017 is only 1sec faster:
