I was just told by my local Toyota dealer that my 2005 Tacoma needs a frame replacement. The dealer told me that I will have to cover any parts not covered by the recall (they are currently performing one and the customer bill is up to $1800)

Has anyone here had the latest frame recall done ( I believe it was issued Aug of this year). Wondering what your out of pocket expenses were.

Hi Jeff from Ct. Welcome to TW. I had frame done last year at Middletown Toyota . I had new shocks and power steering line replaced they gave me about 40% off that was my choice. Only cost me about $175-185. Man that is a lot of money even for a Stealership to get. I had three pages of stuff replaced on Toyota. This is a great place to get more info. They must be having something else done out of the norm. My truck 2006 DC SB

My 2008 Double Cab goes in for a frame replacement in 2 weeks at Westbrook Toyota CT. I will let you know how it goes. So far Westbrook has replaced my transmission (at 70k long story) front bearings, leaf springs for free. I do plan to pay for new shocks. Its actually shocking how many parts i got for free from the 100k warranty.

Hopefully in two weeks I will have a almost new truck

I just bought a set of bilstien 5100 (front and rear) that I was going to install after having the leaf spring recall. Going to ask if the will install during the frame job.

During my inspection they noted two things so far:

    1. Steering rack was leaking - $1100
    2. Timing cover leaking - don't know price yet

I'm getting a quality rebuilt steering rack and bringing it in for the frame swap, with oem outer tie rods. That will be around $500. The tech told me not to do the timing cover as they all seem to leak and it barely leaks anything at all.

I've also replaced all my suspension, upper control arms, rear wheel bearings all within the last 15k miles.

After the dealer confirmed the frame replacement warranty, the dealer quoted $1700 to replace the upper control arms (the ball joint boots are ripped so they want to replace the whole upper control arm) and new front calipers. This is the price for just parts as labor will be included in the frame replacement. Thinking I will ask if they will install a set of tubular UCA instead and look at doing the tundra brake caliper upgrade myself.

Update, The dealer got started on the frame replacement on Tuesday. My out of pocket expenses so far is about $800 to replace calipers, rotors pads, and all rear brake components and $150 in Toyota bed bolts and other hardware.
The upper ball joints needed to be replaced, apparently the dealer will not install new ones so I am replacing them with MOOG OEM replacement UCA for about $150 a pair. The warranty parts include new rear leafs, lower control arms, new brake lines. So most of the suspension and brakes will be brand new.

Seems to vary from dealer to dealer, but some will install aftermarket parts during a frame swap, some won't. Some will install OEM parts not covered by the frame swap warranty, but only charge the price for the parts, and not labor.

This dealer will install customer supplied parts, I just have to waive that they won’t warranty the parts. So far it’s been a good experience. (Been in a rental car for 3 months enjoying 30mpg)

Old thread...but does anyone have follow up info on this? My truck just got approved for the frame replacement, ant I'm wondering what EXACTLY is covered. I'm going to make a list with my mechanic to see what it needs while it's apart. According to the dealer I have 4-6 months before the new frame arrives. Gives me time to hunt down necessary parts. I bought the truck with Helwig leaf springs and a leveling kit...no issue having those re-installed I hope.
