I need some help in getting a good strong winch set up for my 2001 Tacoma.

Looking for recommendations from those that have them.

It may be overkill, but I'm thinking at least 10,000 lb.

Like everything in life, you get what you pay for... One of the more critical specs on a winch is duty cycle and recovery time. You can get a harbor Freight winch for pretty cheap but it has a 5% duty cycle (at capacity) with a 30 minute cool down period, pretty much a waste of money. 90% of the time you are winching 15 to 20 feet, enough to get your rig, out, over or up. The balance of the cable is so that you can attach it to something. If you are the trail blazer that could prove difficult if you are the guy 20 feet into the water hole that is 75 feet long.

Ok, I took some of your advice and got an ARB Bumper and I ordered a Warn M-8000 winch for my 2001 Tacoma.

Now what kind of auxiliary lights would you put on that bumper?

Thanks for the help on this project guys!

What are your plans as far as powering the new toys? I've not pulled the trigger on lights and winch because I get a bit discombobulated when I start to consider alternators, dual batteries or one large one. Wire blocks and such to keep things clean under the hood.

Haven't made any real plans for these new toys! Have a new Heavy Duty Interstate battery, going to test how it powers up the winch and lights .

As usual, gonna ask the guys out here for advice on rhis matter too!

Good choice on the arb and warn. As stated previously, both solid designs with timeless reputation.

So on with the smaller details. Figure out what is the main goal of the truck. What do you do? Hunting, camping, day trips, weekend trips, or month long Alaska adventure? Everyone says they "overland" but the term is way to broad.

I have dual northstar batteries. I highly recommend the brand. When I first started camping a couple years ago, fridge was the first thing I got. Lights, winch, and radio all came later out of necessity. You will find the weak points of your build if you take it slow, rather than buying junk you will NEVER use (you can picture the rotopax and maxtrax hanging off the side of every late model Toyota mall crawler).

Good choice on choosing a bigger battery for the winch if you see yourself using it frequently. Try out the Interstate, and if it fails the performance test of a couple outings, upgrade to duals. I have had several dual battery setups. PM me if you want more advice, don't want to thread jack.

For lights, get LEDs. Rigid is good quality, but a bit spendy for typical American consumer mindset. But I believe that the lowest price is not the cheapest. The offbrands and china lights are junk, ask me how I know. And no where near the output and focus (<this last point is something people don't consider). I have made the personal choice to only in Rigid, and I am in no way affiliated with the brand. I have bought all my lights used or NIB but less than retail pricing.
Baja designs and visionx both look like quality as well. Don't buy anything bigger than 20" light bar. Or get 2 small lights. I have a rigid 20" and it's more than enough. And I do mean that.

Good luck with the build. Tons of fun driving and exploring with these awesome trucks, even stock:thumbsup:

This is gonna be my daily driver AND my main hunting rig! I own an operate a big game guide service in Arizona.

Gonna sell my Arctic Cat and custom Suzuki Samurai now that Ive got this rig.

Very interested in the dual battery system that you have talked about. I really didn't see any place to put another battery under the hood, but if there's something that you can recommend, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it.

I do have a 2006 F350 and I've got a Warn 16.5K winch on that rig, but of course it's a dual battery setup in my diesel truck.

I noticed that there Is a place for two round lights on the front of that bumper and that's specifically what I'm looking for. I have had KC Daylighters in the past but it's been many many years. Just didn't know if there was anything better out there now.

Again I really appreciate all the input that I have received from a number of people concerning this build of a 2001 Tacoma. It's been very helpful and I will not hesitate to ask all for advice as I go on with this project truck!

I ended up putting on a pair of Rigid D-XL Pro on the front of ARB bumper. Got em installed today. Can't wait to try em out!

I'm out deer hunting right now on the Arizona Strip, and I still don't know how to post pictures here.

Can tell you the winch/bumper/light set up sure looks nice!

I'll figure it out and post when I get back.
