my airbag light came in this week and Toyota Toyota tested it and told me it’s the airbag sensor assembly in the dash. They wanted $1100.00 but I declined. I can get the assembly for $550 from dealerships online. Has anyone ever replaced this? Do I run the risk of setting the airbags off?

I did mine a few years ago. ..I paid like 230 online....just unhook the battery for a while. It's simple...2 or 3 screws....star pattern I believe. There is also a company that will supposedly fix it if you mail it to them. Turn around is pretty fast too....just Google it

Did you follow any sort of procedure? I was reading on another forum that a guy with a Lexus replaced his. The directions from Toyota/Lexus were posted. Seemed a bit technical as you have to do thing in a particular order such as leave the key in the lock position, disconnecting the neg terminal then waiting 90 seconds before doing anything to avoid accidental deployment.

I have even removed my airbag in steering wheel to change my clock spring....never went off on me. I guess you could pull a fuse and disconnect battery and wait a while....

I have my perfectly good 2001 Taco air bag sensor available if you need it....for much cheaper than the prices you mentioned.

Disconnect negative battery cable before you do any work. That way be the time you get to the airbag module all systems are fully down. Disconnect connectors BEFORE unbolting the module. Install new module and tighten bolts BEFORE plugging it in. Bottom line is, never have the module connected while it is not secured to the vehicle, and have the battery disconnected at all times of course.

Also, I'm fairly certain the airbag module is under the center console, not in the dash. But I could be wrong...

The electric wiring diagram manual states "Work must be started after 90 seconds from when the ignition switch is turned to the "locked" position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery. (The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source so that if work is started within 90 seconds from disconnecting the negative (-) terminal cable of the battery, the srs may be deployed.)" From my manual. Yes the air bag module is below the stereo. You may need to take out the whole dash and the seats too. Then peel back the carpet. The shift console and center console and all. I am preparing to do the same job. Here is a photo of mine the last time I had it apart.DSC00028.jpg There it is with the yellow plug. I am sure that I remember 3 torques holding the bracket to the trans tunnel. On the double cab, there are plastic heating ducts that run under the seats. These ducts block the Torques screws from being removed. I looked the other day.

There was more going on in the photo than just an air bag module. I think you may be able to ease the plastic ducts out of the way. The 4 screws that hold the module to the bracket are underneath.

Hey I am having the same problem and my mechanic is claiming a price tag of over $800 for the part itself. Any luck in maybe avoiding a high priced part and can I locate online? If so, what part number or description should I look for. I have a 2001 Taco Crew Cab TRD. Thanks gents!!

Is it still available? I am having the same issue. The mechanic referred to it as the Air Bag Computer. Is this the same thing? I have a 2002 Tacoma Ext Cab V6 4x4. Thanks...Jay
