Mine is cut just like this. I cut it with a small hacksaw by hand.

Mine actually looks just like this. I cut it and attached a cheap little $15 tip on the end from AutoZone.

And that's why California has such strict laws about vehicles. My mom says that when I was a baby there were days you couldn't see two blocks because of the smog. And that was in Santa Monica, where the ocean breezes blow a lot of it away. I find it necessary to remind young whippersnappers that the air is soooooooooooo much cleaner these days than when I was young, and that's primarily due to the EPA clamping down on "freedom". Freedom to poison everyone's air.

There may be some truth in this, but the message might benefit from more tactful rhetoric. Private property rights lawfully protect people from said pollution. The EPA is the agency that actually sets legal / "allowable" limits to how much pollution can be dumped into the ground and water, for example.

I sold my exhaust tip and bed step right after I bought the truck. I kinda like the no bs sound of just the pipe!

I grew up in LA and yes we had way more pollution back then. Pollution so thick you couldn't see planes flying over head. But chopping 2 feet off of my exhaust pipe when it's after the muffler will have no greater impact on the environment than if it had the 2 feet of pipe still on it.

Sorry, as neat as it looks without the pipe sticking out and the benefit of not worrying about it getting hit or bent (and my worries of Halloween tricksters with potatoes) I still would worry about sitting in a shell in the bed for long with that pipe bend cut while idilling, and would worry about transport anything alive back there in stop and go traffic... Does it add a spot of extra heat to the plastic bed right above the pipe opening? If so, I'd worry about premature plastic embrittlement not doing so well for it in the long run, and I'd worry about the bed warranty too. Or, do I just worry too much? :(

Your frame is going to rust out before there will be any heat damage to the bed. Most who do this don't carry live cargo back there while driving. We carry stuff to and from the mall.

How/why are you in the bed with the truck running? I could run it and take temps of the bed but I doubt it will make a difference. I’m more concerned with you. Tell me more. When you, say, choose a canned soup, do you opt out of the Salisbury steak Campbell’s hearty for fear that since you live alone, you may choke on a meatball, and nobody will be able to heimlich you? Is this why you only eat during the day and in public?

Valid things to be thinking about, for sure. I don't think, as long as there is some down-turn, that the heat is cause for concern on the bed. I wouldn't be surprised if the bed surface gets hotter in the sun in many regions than it would from the exhaust gasses after a chop, as long as it isn't cut right at the top of the bend over the axle.

I was just joking about the worries as I didn't do it, but some dodo bird will probably do something stupid like letting his kids sit in the bed while the engine is idilling to power his big screen TV one day, or putting his dogs or extra riders back there in traffic, but then that's what the Darwin Awards are for.

As I was cutting my exhaust, I asked myself if I was making a mistake. So I stopped and went through every possible scenario. Will this suffocate me? Risk mitigation. I feel you. But then the inner Bro showed up and called my inner risk mitigator a pussy. I put my hat on backwards and continued cutting and I haven’t looked back. Though to be honest bros are constantly dying from stupidity so we will just have to wait this one out for results.

Look at the bright side, you've found a way to foil the Halloween potato pranksters, they got a bunch of cars in our neighborhood last year!

Guess I just like the idea of no visible exhaust pipe hanging out one side...symmetry and all.

So the little heat shield past the bend is for the spare?
