Got way too yesterday...

 

Just ordered belts and pulleys for the Ferd. I thought it was going to be cheap until I realized there are 2 belts.... which means double the idlers and tensioners. Looks like I have to rip half the engine bay apart to get at them also, looks like next weekend will be fun. But at least they didn't bolt the A/C compressor to the tensioner like some manufacturers

oh, I will. Once I get the shrouds off, I'll have lots of room between the radiator and the front of the engine to work with. And everything bolts directly onto the front of the engine.

 

Must be nice....

 

Anyone have any experience with installing a remote starter on a manual vehicle?

I'm thinking of adding one to my FJ because winters up here are cold.

I was thinking of running a safety switch to my transfer case shifter, so the remote starter will only engage when the t-case is in neutral. That way it's kind of a fail-safe.

 

It's a trade off, they set the engine pretty far back in the engine bay. The front is really accessible but the back would be a bitch to work on. I'm guessing changing plugs won't be an easy task.

Have to override the clutch start switch also. Some people just jump it out.

 

I don't have one but had been looking at them. They typically have a shut down sequence that you have to follow which is looking for ebrake being engaged and, I believe, the clutch switch not being activated prior to shut down to verify your in neutral.

 

Those things are useless on a gas engine, at least in the temps seen in upstate NH. I'd consider a block heater as it would help during a cold start. Once it's running though, you don't need anything like that on a gasser.

 

On an older manual, I had the ebrake freeze overnight. Ever since then, I always just kept my manual trucks in gear when parked. That was enough of a deterrent to look into remote start for me. It took a while to get it freed up, and it let go with a very loud thud. I can't believe nothing broke in the process.

 

I always keep my vehicles in gear as well. I will engage the e-brake, but that is something to think about given it does get cold around here. My driveway is on a bit of an incline so I'm reluctant to put the extra stress on the gearbox.

Heated seats help a great deal to combat not having a remote start. I absolutely miss it, but I much prefer the 6MT. The baby ruins my easy out ability at home though. Since the wife is a teacher she'd typically get all the super snowy days off, often the night before any snow fell. I'd put her Jeep outside on the side yard and then park my truck in the garage. Since she'd not need to go out, I'd just power through the snow in the AM and then worry about cleaning the driveway when I got home. Unfortunately with the baby I cannot in good conscience trap her at the house, so I think from now on I'll just need to dig myself out and either let the truck warm up or rely on the seat heaters to keep my somewhat toasty while the truck warms up.

 

And that's why I didn't have one installed. I'd only use it to warm up the truck when leaving work/clear the windshield on snowy days and that's the last place I want the ebrake to get stuck on!
