I have a question for gearcruncher. I got a 99 Tacoma that’s got over 200, k on it. Running great has a hard shift problem only on take offs, just first gear. And only when it’s cold. I just serviced the transmission and filter. No metal in pan. Just dirty oil. Somewhat dark color. Put new Toyota oil and filter. Problem still seems to be better but there. Anyone advise or help.

Check your transmission line pressure cable. Some people think it's kickdown cable, but it's not. It's on the throttle body next to the throttle cable. You should have throttle, trans line pressure, and cruise control. Eliminate the other two and you have your trans pressure cable. See if it's fully relaxed. If it's tight at all, you'll have a pretty harsh shift into 2nd.

You've already covered the fluid, but a drain and fill with cheap DexIII every few oil changes will keep the fluid nice.

I’m going to check that. I did notice that I had over filled the transmission levels. I put in the 4 qts from the dealer I got. It’s seam fine. But had a little leakage and kinda shift hard. Week ago. Yesterday I got time to recheck the levels oil was dirty again. So instead of draining a little I drained all of it. Got more oil from parts house synthetic transmission oil for Toyota. Is what I used so for so good. Shift good now. Just like my new one.
