Has anyone successfully registered their Tacoma as a passenger vehicle? Specifically in Illinois?

My argument is based on the vehicle having four doors and seats five.

    Thx

I think you're dealing with something unique to your state. My DCSB is a passenger vehicle in AZ.

    Thx for the reply Blanco.
I discussed this with the dealer when I bought it. He said, truck". I said, passenger vehicle". My argument was that the Subaru Brat was a passenger vehicle due to the jump seats in the bed. He scratched his head saying he has always registered them as trucks.

A search of the ISOS website has come up with this...
    • Passenger plates are multi-year and may be displayed on passenger vehicles, vans weighing 8,000 pounds or less and sport utility vehicles.
    • B-truck license have staggered annual renewals are displayed on trucks and vans weighing 8,000 pounds or less, sport utility vehicles and antique trucks.
I have yet to find any description for the number of occupants.

In Rhode Island, my truck is registered with combination plates. Means I can use it for both personal and commercial use, and it weighs less than 8000 lbs. I'm not sure if my state would let me register it with passenger plates. If they did, it potentially limits what I am allowed to use the truck for, and could be fined if caught.

Afaik, only the cost of the registration is affected.

I'm going to have to try when I renew. The truck plates restricts me from certain roads overnight parking in the city.

Yeah, that's unfortunate. I remember living in a state - maybe NE when I was young and they had Truck plates that were different. Maybe CO also had them, but it was not forced on you, it was something you would request based on how you were going to use and license and insure the vehicle.
