Sorry to dig up an old thread again, but mine does not have a hose runnig up under the hood. The two hoses I found under the hood on the wheel well appear to be from the front locker. Any ideas on how to convert this breather so you can put a hose on it? It does not thread in like the rear diff.

Sorry to dig up such an old thread, but I've gotta do this fix over the weekend. I'm assuming this is where my leak is coming from. I looked through all the threads I could find, maybe I missed it...but is there any guide for the automatics on what has to be disconnected to get the plate up?

I can of course jump in there and figure it out, just don't want to miss a spring or something and not be able to get it all back together the same. Any pointers?

Nope, basically no difference between the automatics and manual tranmission. Just pull the shifter assembly (have to disconnect it from the shift rod on the drivers side of the tranmission) then access the t-case shifter same as in the photos above.

Just got an 04 TRD 6 speed and looks like the same issue of that gasket on the transfer case shifter or atleast I hope. Brand new to the site and wealth of info here. Thanks for this thread fellas. Don't know I would have checked that breather under the hood that is clogged to shit.

Need to do list. Any part #’s for the gaskets and follow ups with whether or not the breathers are easily replaced?
    Thanks

I did this to my 2004 it was a great help in finding and fixing this leak, I just hand tightened the bolts and didn't lay into them and all was well. pretty easy job if you follow along with the OPs instructions, Toyota doesn't sell that gasket, just trace out the old one on some gasket material, cut out, I applied a super light coat of grey RTV to both sides, and snugged it back together, worked 100% great

Did this a few days ago...
Bought the fel-pro gasket maker and factory gaskets.. Should have used the felpro but factory ones are working just fine so far. Also used black RTV.

Just a question, my truck seems to leak on a small incline, but doesn't leak on the same driveway when on the decline. The leak is from the transfer case and somewhere else, maybe ATF. Any thoughts on if this is the issue or what else it could be?

I just bought the truck I’m a new taco owner
How do you take off the breather that is by the 4x4 shifter? Mine looked like is the OEM never been replaced, idk how to pull it off to change it and I’m scared to mess it up if I pull it with some pliers

On my 1996 Taco, I just popped off the breather with pliers. In my case, the breather consisted of a cap and underneath, a small spring and black thingie that probably closed up or opened the vent as needed.

bumpity... Been meaning to get to this for a bit, finally doing so with all the other crud I swapped out for a 280k maintenance. Question though, the 4wd selector has the paper metal sandwich gasket, is the main shifter supposed to as well or does it only have the metal one? Mine (2002 4wd 5spd) only has the thin metal plate gasket, not even rtv, and is leaking more on the tranny side than the xfer side, which looks almost dry. I'm wondering if I need to craft a couple gaskets for this or just spread some rtv on the metal one when I put it back in, or if its fine without anything and maybe its leaking from somewhere else. Do the spring pins have seals/gaskets that could fail?

Also, its almost time for a clutch (still orig!), so input/output seals will be on the list. Thoughts on replacing the input/output shaft bearings as well (it has started to whine a little)?

Yep, need to seal, I used black rtv and then changed it for felpro material and I think red rtv as well,
