Here’s a list of parts for a first gen pre to 4x4 manual hub conversion. Cant remember where I snapped it.

I am going to look at some parts. The donor truck is a 98 Tacoma regular cab with a manual trans. What I am looking to get from this is the entire front 4X4 unit. Spindles, manual hubs, Axles, Diff assembly 4.10 gear, Front drive shaft (I believe it will need to be shortened for my auto trans application). J shift transfer case. Should bolt right up when I either find the A340F or swap out the 4x4 output shaft to my tranny. He has offered up the B03A rear end as well but I haven't decided if I want another one. I suppose if I got it I could do the work on it to accept an E Locker 3rd member when I find one. It looks like I can get all these parts for around 750. I may also take the rear drive shaft as it would give me material to make shafts the correct length in case I can't find affordable shafts.

I am preparing to do another pre-runner double cab to 4x4 swap myself in a week or two. One thing that sucked was I have two front diffs on hand, nether were the correct gear ratio 4.56 and 3.58. I needed 4.10s. I got one with the ADD, but change out the axle tube. This at lease gave me the opportunity to verify ratio. The only possible delays are the manual hubs being pressed into the ABS steer knuckles and having the front portion of the drive shaft shortened. For those I am at the mercy of the machine shops. Be mindful of 4 cylinder to v6 the t-case are different, top shift (v6) and forward shift (4cyl).

Can you elaborate on the different transfer cases? I always thought you only had to worry about the bellhousing.

Yeah I am curious here too. First I have heard of this difference. Gonna do some more research.

From what I can find the R100 transfer case was mated to Auto or Manual trans behind the 2.7, 3.4, or 4.0. The forward shift transfer case was hung behind the 22r motors pre 1995 or so. I am sure there are a few exceptions in those mid 90's trucks but it seems safe to assume that just about any 2.7 liter truck is going to have the R100 top shift transfer case behind it.

I'm still not familiar on how to do the ADD swap. I've heard it has some complications. I have an 04 extra Cab 3.4 auto. If I took every single part I need out of a 04 double cab 3.4 auto 4x4. I'm pretty sure the swap would be fairly easy, but is there any other complications with keeping the ADD and keeping an auto transmission. Or would I simply replace and bolt up every part I need.

This is for automatic transmission, that I am aware of. The clean transfer case is v6 top shift and the other is 4cyl forward shift (1999 Tacoma). The 4 cylinder engine was moved back 3 inches requiring a forward shift transfer case. I found this out when I first changed my v6 truck to 4x4 with a 4 cylinder donor truck. I did not get it right away. I had to find out when the shift lever would not mount. I just put it in 4 hi and drove to get the correct transfer case in front wheel drive as I did not have the rear drive-line yet,LOL.

This 1999 Tacoma was a 2.7 auto 4.56 gears and a forward shift Transfer case.

So instead it's just the 4wd button on the side of the 4x shifter? Did keeping add involve any extra wiring ? Or mainly bolt up?

OK. So it is still an R100 just a different shifter orientation. From the picture it looks like I could swap in the top shift to transfer case if need be. Thanks for mentioning this as I would not have known to look for this difference and would have found out like you did.

I think it would be more of a pain to try to convert the transfer case from forward shift to top shift. Also the plates that cover the shift location are a pain to find. I was using a 4 cylinder a340f that had the forward shift. So when I found the top shift transfer case, I needed the cover that mounted in the transmission to transfer case adapter. The covers were not the same and would not work to swap them. The guy that I got the transfer case from wouldn't even sell me the cover I needed off of the transmission the transfer case came from. I offered him 20.00, but he wouldn't take it. I did end up buying the whole transmission though just for the plate. Sounds bad but it was only 70.00 more than I paid for the transfer case.

So just to get more info for me when I type up a write-up - you have to use a transfer case from the respective engine you have, and the correct bellhousing from the engine you have. Anything else that isn't inter-compatible?

It’s the 4x4 on the side of the shifter and it “shifts” into high and low. For ease of install i utilized OEM harnesses. This is probably the least popular of the 4x4 swaps. But I love it.
