What would cause a Solenoid Switch to fail early?

$30 Cole Hersee - 24059-08-BP (24059-BP) 12V Insulated SPST Continuous Duty Solenoid

This is what I have. It connects my Aux battery to a secondary

$30 Blue Sea Systems 5025 ST Blade Fuse Block 6 Circuit with Ground and Cover

Blue Seas fuse block.

Fuse block supplies power to a CB and an in-cab 12v USB/cig light power receptacle. No high power devices attached to this circuit.

Trigger current (via ignition switched power) to the solenoid tested OK.

 

Usually heat, because chatter issues are usually heard or seen before failure. As an inductor, the coils do not like to be oscillated at a frequency above a threshold of usually around 2~3Hz for low voltage applications.

 

Is there a better option to remotely switch on a circuit (30-40 AMP max) Murph?

 

Normally a solenoid switch would be first choice, as they are encased, a sealed

12V 50A relay is getting large, and contactors like they use in winch controls need an enclosure. You may want to shop at NAPA or some other commercial vehicle parts store to get better quality. Expect to spend at least $30~$60. The industrial ones that I use at 24V DC are in the $200~300 range but go for millions of cycles at 90 degrees C. Cheap units use cheap wire with cheap insulation and can't handle the heat.

 

Unfortunately Dan @M192 had the pleasure of airing up right next to me once. I was done will all 4 tires before he was done with 2. He went out and bought a twin and made up a dual tire inflator like mine.

 

Twin is basically two singles. Exactly double the displacement. I was considering throwing in the free single I got with my lockers to air up faster. .
Or sell it for $200

 

I regret not buying a twin.

@Subway4X4 , on the switch, or relay, look for 50A rating, continuous duty, 90C temp. You can go for a lower price, just buy 2 so you have a spare, and mount it where it gets air from the fan.

Edit: You can seal a relay with silicone on the holes, not too much, then pack the female connections with bulb grease, and finally put more silicone into the back of the connector where the wires come out. We've been doing that on farm tractors for years, works just fine.

 

I love the cheap Chinese relays that are 30/40 amp rated. Only good for 30 amps in closed position, but 40 amps open.

cheap 30A NC/ 40A NO relays with bonus sockets/pigtail, and seal the hell out of it. I'll use one and have 11 spares.
