We were only out for like an hour. Had other more important stuff to do, at least according to the wife.

He does have fun. I tried to get worms that day to let him catch some bluegill and bass, but every damn shop was closed. So I had two rods out with powerbait on the bottom for trout, and let him toss that spinner. He had a blast seeing how far he could get it out there.

Update, took the kids out for their first time and they loved it. Even though they didn't catch anything they said they wanted to do it again. And that, makes me happy. My oldest daughter (9) caught on to casting real quick and my oldest boy (11) caught on afterwards. I'm hoping they learn how to not tangle their line though, because that got old quick.

spending 50$ on the uglystix is the way to go. my daughter loves hers, i have one she uses for flounder, if you are pond fishing, a 6 to 6'6" medium will cover most bases from the bank. you dont need to go crazy on gear. its more about the time spent, than money at that age.

Agreed, that's why I went cheap. They were happy with the experience

I got my kids some decent trout size rods, they have pulled in 3 lb bass with no probs at all. When I figure out how to send pics I guess I will.

cant really go too wrong with a zebco. If they catch on quick with the spin caster then let them to it. Id use some 6-8lb braided line on the spin casters. The mono will bird nest for a while till it relaxes. The old bobber, small split sinker and worm seems to always catch bluegill or stick a minnow on it and try to get a crappie.
