It really is a fun road to run! Glad you had a good time there.

Which route did you take? I've been foiled by the gate from the NC side AND the SC side. Please tell me it is unlocked and/or open!

Auger Hole is closed, we went down to the river, hung out then came back. I bought their best map and it shows a perminatley closed gate on the state lines.

Man, bummer. Every time I have been there you could go from Chestnut Mt Rd to Auger Hole Tr all the way the the NC/SC border. Some of the side roads have been open, too.

Did you try to open the gate? A dude recently told me they sometimes leave the gate unlocked, but I have not been there since to try it.

Both gates were closed at the 3 way intersection, I didn't try to open them.

Curious about the 3-way intersection. At the end of Chestnut Mt Rd there is kind of a parking area for 4 or 5 vehicles, and a maybe hard to see right turn to Auger Hole Tr. There is also a left and a straight that are typically blocked off. As you continue on Auger Hole Tr there is also a turn that leads to two roads that I do not have names for. They both dead end. There is a crossing at Horse Pasture River that will test your high clearance, then a climb up and around the mountain. That bridge at Horse Pasture looks like it would be a great place to stop for camping.

Ok I messed up, I thought the right turn was unnamed on the map, but if that's Auger Hole then it's open. We turned around at Horse Pasture since we were alone while some have said the part after thr bridge is nasty. What beside the falls is on that second part?

Since you are 4wd and hopefully with decent tires you can take the entire road from where the bridge crosses Horses Pasture to the SC border. There is a spot where you can hear a nearby waterfall. We have trekked a tiny bit to try and find it before, but no luck yet.

The first half of it will resemble HPR, then it turns into Auger Hole Trail and it gets a little rougher until it crosses Horse Pasture river, then it gets a good bit rougher.

Any options to get off at any time? I’ve got that busted CV boot and don’t want it to get any worse.

No, it's an in and back out only. :( There is a gate at the NC/SC border that is supposedly locked. I haven't tested it, though.

About how long does it take to run it? My buddy is going to come but he’s coming from Charlotte.

Couple of hours with a great place to stop at the river for a break or lunch or whatever. There are sides roads that, if open, push it out to four or so hours.

I am going to actually be out of this run, though. Wife wants to look at houses this weekend and I should have known she would. If you are considering going, I encourage you to!

Given my buddy ia coming from Charlotte, i think we’ll just hit HP instead due to time constraints. I’d ideally like to be out there, starting, when the just is coming up or has just been up for about an hour.
