My plans are to run as wide of a tire, supercharge, and suspension upgrades (king shocks, RAS active suspension, etc.)

Use is strictly tarmac as a commuter - but with occasional trips (on asphalt) to Lake Tahoe for ski season (will run Blizzaks).

My thoughts are that 17" wheel/tire setup will be more comfy and more ideal for straight line acceleration.

My question is if I will gain or lose on the handling aspect by going from 18" to 17".

Alter your sidewall height for the new tires.

When I was looking for wheels/tires for my RC, I had a hard time finding 17" tires that were similar in diameter to stock. There arent many 255/50/17's out there and even going up to 275 width, there just isnt anything really out there unless you want to shorten or heighten your overall diameter. I was considering a 275/40/17, but that was just too short for me (1.3" shorter overall) so I caved and just got some 255/45/18s.

looks like Iʻm staying with 18ʻs ..... I did some research on the tire size and it seems that 285/40r18 keeps the outside diameter OEM size.

275/40/18 would also be close enough (IMO) and provides far more choice.
