I have Fox level 4 on mine, and Stage 5 icons on the wifes . They both have great rides on and off road

I got a guy here at work that says the same thing. I don't know him all that well, but I'm going to try to get a ride with him some night (we both work nights).

I'm sure the off-road performance will be great, but I am concerned about the on-road ride as well. My wife rides with me a lot in the truck, I don't want to be jarring her teeth out with what I know is a stiffer ride!

I think one of the most important statements and perhaps most correct is that ride quality and off road performance are subjective. Having had kings, Fox, Bilsteins, OME and few others, all of them performed well. A person can find "Fact" and "Opinion" to pretty much support what ever view they wish on the internet.
I don't think a person can really be disappointed in any of these manufactures and each one has their share of successes. Each manufacture has valid proof of their design and product quality. I think it's best to pick your terrain and driving style and type of vehicle and pick the one that fits your need. My experience and opinion is that anyone of them will deliver good performance.

Just as a side note, a lot of my driving is on logging roads and fire roads getting to and from hunting and fishing spots. At times when it's safe I like to speed up a bit.

Our driving styles seem to be pretty much identical. I go crawling just a few times in the spring/summer, most of my off-road driving is just rutty dirt roads and trails. I'd like my suspension stiffer for that, and just a shade higher than it is now for when I'm occasionally crawling along someplace.

One of the things I like about what I'm hearing about the Icons is that on-road they corner really well, I just want to make sure my wife's still comfy when we're heading out to dinner or a movie too.

I tried to look at your pics, but there was an error - "This member limits who may view their full profile". :(

Thank tons for your replies, they were really helpful!

Yes, that sounds very similar to what I was trying to achieve with my truck as well. I will look at the album again and see if I can find out whats wrong. Maybe a kind, active and helpful moderator could give me an idea why the album is giving that error. :D
I'll post a few pics if I cant figure it out.

Your correct in a lot of ways. These suspensions are indeed objective. Of the " big three" I found Fox, icon and Kings to be very capable on and off road.
I also have had the chance to use OME products, I found these to also perform well.
But out of these, "to me" the Icon and Fox have always felt more comfortable both on and offroad. And at speeds from crawl to letting loose on various terrains.
I especially enjoy speed in the desert!
Kings are great also, I just did not think they were as comfortable. But that could also be a little bit because an acquaintance was always going on about King this and King that, so my prejudice could be at play on the Kings :). Lol
Funny how stupid things can dictate your opinion on things.

I essentially have a stage 3 setup with total chaos UCA instead of the billet icons. Very happy with how it performs both on and off road.

Glad to hear those work. I would love to visit Colorado sometime. I've seen so many nice pictures of trails there. We had a pretty dry summer this year so I was enjoying some parts of a few trails that would normally be flooded and require massive mud tires and winches.

Plenty mods on many vehicles since 1982. Current: 15 Tacoma 4X4 V6 TRD OR Access Cab Pyrite Mica- Icon full stage 7, All-Pro APEX sliders & rear Expedition Springs + custom Tampa Springs leaf spring upgrades, Timbren bump stops, u-bolt flip, Road Armor front stealth winch bumper & rear steel, Warn Vr 8000, Nitto Terra Grappler 285/75/r16, Off Grid Engineering Dual Battery system, SPod 6 switch, 2 pairs Rigid D2 spot & flood in bumper, ARE Expedition Cap, bedglide,Tru Cool 45K GVW add on transmission cooler, Re-gear to 4.56, rigid rear bumper floods, scan guage II, rigid ditch lights. full size spare on matching factory wheel, seat mods/insert, CB w/magnet mount.
I went through a similar decision making process and opted for the Icon Stage 7 with the round uca’s Instead of billet. Best choice I’ve made so far with my build. I couldn’t get over the grabby brakes and front end dip when stock, coming from a 2500 LTZ 4 door long bed Duramax Chevy. It’s a rediculous amount of money but the on road and off road ride and handling (two different things! Lol) are fantastic. I combined the Icon suspension with AllPro Expedition springs, timbren bump stops and an All Pro shackle flip kit. I just got back from a trip where we rode for days off road in the NC and GA mountains and tackled the roughest (steepest, rockiest, sandiest, stream crossing est, muddiest, twistyist) conditions I’ve driven in with the truck to date and I’m super happy with my set up. The Stage 7 system comes with dual adjustable shocks so you can customize each stroke to your liking or based on weight and conditions. I run a 2015 TRD OR acess cab long bed with an ARE topper and a 23-0 RTT, road Armor front bumper with winch, all pro Apex sliders and 33” tires. Only change I made to the set up after install was to upgrade to the 700# springs after putting the front winch bumper on. I drive all kinds of bad asphalt, highway and dirt, and trails. Better ride, ability to go faster in any conditions and much much better handling across all driving conditions. Very happy with my set up. The All pro expedition springs really opened up my ability to have heavy loads and comfort with almost no chance in stance or length of stroke in the rear. I’ve put about 4000 miles of off road driving under the truck since buying it last year and I have all but about 200 of those miles on the suspension as described.

I would strongly recommend anyone looking to get Icons to hunt down someone who has them and go for a ride. Many guys dont realize how rough icons can ride from a suspension point of view until they have them on their truck and now have to deal with the purchase. For instacne, a member up by me bought his icons based off another guys build when he first entered the scene. Now he is in contemplation of selling his icons after his ego has finally come down a little bit due to how jarring his suspension is compared to most of the other guys on the trail.

I get it that not everyone can afford kings, but shit last I checked Icon costs more if you get the Remote resi version than king does and king normally gets free shipping! If I had to make a recommendation, look into either fox or SAW (sway aways) if you don't want a resi front shock.

I have 2.5 non resi EXT with tubular Dirt King UCA. I was looking at Bilstein 6112s, I just wanted an adjusable collar. Looked at everything, including RadFlow, and couldn't figure out where to get Swayaway. My driving is mostly on asphalt roads, that are terrible.

I made my purchase in spite of the reviews. I can always change my mind when it's time to rebuild.

Great looking truck! I like how you kept it clean original modified look lol. your suspension sounds awesome. I've heard good things about the allpro springs. I think I will try them out on my next build.

Sounds like a good system. Best antidote to the Kool-Aid drinkers is to actually get on the trail and learn and enjoy!

Thanks man. It’s a work in progress. I just took off my tent today and increased the softness on all the shocks. The expedition leafs are truly progressive and are fantastic, especially if you run variable weights in the bed.
