It was much much more then that, if I remember correctly I ended up replacing the 4x4 actuator and diff in the front end. I still got the truck and she still loves the beat downs, just not as often as before. Thanks man

Thanks for recording sound. I have taken mine to dealership and left it overnight and they claimed no problems. They claimed that because truck was new the Pistons were would flapper a little in sleeves. It did not make sense. My truck was too new to be left in dealer parking for 1 week while they did nothing so I have lived with sound till this morning when I woke to move truck in garage from outside and after starting my truck the noinoise from engine after cold start annoying me and then did this search. Please post any updates or fixes. It does not do it after warm up so by the time I am at dealership I cannot be there with them to experience cold start. I may use this recording on my next visit.

My 2006 2.7 base model does the same thing, after looking at it along with multiple of my buddy mechanics, and after reading it looks as if it just does it as part of the startup cycle while the engine gets to operating temperature. I remember it not doing it when i first bought my truck but hey, it has 89k miles on it

This is applicable to any Toyota/Lexus vehicle with a 4.0L V6 GR Motor, most common in Tacoma's, 4Runners, and FJ's, (although the engine layout is slightly different).

So you start your truck cold and it makes a steady high pitch whining/whirling sound right after start up, but only for approximately 20 seconds, then stops, and it only does this only when the engine is cold. Does this sound like your problem? If so, here's the exact explanation of what's actually going on.

These engines have a SMOG Secondary Air Injection Pump, located in the engine compartment on the passenger side (left) at the very top, along the side wall. It is before the Denso Fuel Injection Control Module, and after the Air Intake and Washer Fluid Reservoir. It is all black, and circular shaped. It has a single hose attached, which routes to a rail mounted to the top of the exhaust manifold, and a series of electrical wires, white, black, purple, and white/black stripe, which routes to the a part of the wiring harness running along the left wall. This component is what the sound emits from, and here's why it does this.

In this component, there is an electric fan, which activates for approximately 20 seconds after the engine starts if it is well below operating temperature. The purpose of this fan is to force fresh air into the exhaust system (via the hose directly routing to the rail mounted to the exhaust manifold). This is done so the exhaust catalyst can lite much faster than if it was only igniting off of exhaust fumes. It only takes a few seconds to lite, and only really needs help when it's really cold.

So I would not recommend tampering with this, and advise you to just let this component perform as designed by the manufacturer, as there is nothing wrong with it, and it is functioning as intended. I guess if it really bothers you, you could just unplug the connector powering the fan, but that might turn on the check engine light, possibly even throw a few fault codes. But honestly, why bother? Its a quick high pitch sound that lasts for only 20 seconds. Is it really that big of a deal?

Lets put it this way. If I can put up with my wife whining 24/7, then you can put up with your Tacoma whining 20 seconds. I sure put up with both, at least the truck isn't as high maintenance as she is.

By the way, I know this thread is way old, but I always wondered about this, and this is one of the places that I looked for the answer. So when I finally discovered it, I thought I would at least post it. (Brand new to the forum also:)

So, had to create an account after seeing this... in my case, in my 3.4 I really get a nice long SPECIFICALLY power steering for sure, only when cold and sometimes worse if parked nose down, while I was in northern Washington when it was pretty damn cold in the morning it would wine for about 10 minutes pretty loudly and sounded like a Ford Explorer

Bottom line, after engine warmed up it would be fine unless a harsh turning situation were to arise, then it would get a small whine flicker but go away right away. Have not really checked fluid, but I am considering doing a fluid change hopefully soon. Will let you guys know the results. I'm in the Bay Area now and it gets just cold enough for it to whine for a bit before warming up, soon to go back to Washington so I'd like to get it done before then. Any ideas before I get going? Anyone else have any luck doing the same? Or heard the same on their truck?

Hey, you never know...not the first time this thread has come back from the dead.
I'll throw another possible cause into the ring...I have a cold start whine with my truck as well. It is a 2nd gen 2.7 automatic access cab 4X4. The power steering pump, lines and fluid are new. No whine there. The other morning was pretty brisk, so I started the truck and crawled underneath for a listen. The transmission pump whines a bit when cold, but not once warmed up. I wonder if it is a common trait and some people are just more sensitive to it.

Draining and Cleaning the power steering reservoir helped my 2003 tacoma. I’m sure the stuff I used wasn’t safe but it worked. I disconnected the hose that returns to the power steering reservior and Then I ran the truck while adding transmission fluid to reservoir. I watched it on YouTube. It works. Next time I’m adding diesal to clean it better since it’s starting to make noises again.
