I️ was looking to buy tires for the taco I️ wanted to buy the tires first and upgrade the wheels later but I️ was told that you can’t use 16” aftermarket wheels on the Tacoma is that true, or are they just wanting me to buy 17s ?

You can use 16's or 17's or even 18's.

4Wheelparts is having a deal on the Ko’s but they said you can’t use an aftermarket 16 on the 3ed Gen

My buddy put it on his stick 16s with just the 5100 3” lift but he had to add a 1” wheel spacer and it still rubs when he turns and hits a bump. What everyone’s thoughts on running wheels spacers safe or not?

There are plenty of 16" wheels out there in the market that will fit your Tacoma. 4 Wheel Parts owns Pro Comp wheels so not all of their 16" wheels will clear the Tacoma's caliper. The sales guy probably doesn't know much about Tacoma or was too lazy to cross reference actual fitment.
