I purchased a 2017 Toyota Tacoma SR,4 cylinder from the dealership. Long story short when you look at the picture i've provided you can obviously see the tow hitch below. Now do you see that plastic round piece to the left of my plate? What is supposed to go there exactly?

That’s where the OEM tow brake light plugs mount into the bumper - one half of that is the round 7-pin plug, the other is a 4-pin. Yours doesn’t have the tow package, so the bumper hole is covered up. It looks like your truck has an aftermarket trailer hitch and wire harness set up.

You can get a ‘OEM’ lookalike harness set to put into that hole on EBay for $30 or so.

So there is no possible way for me to get that installed in there instead of having that wire hanging down like so?

I think you can get one- search for “2017 Tacoma trailer harness kit”

There’s a bunch of options on etrailer and EBay - the dealer won’t tell you that.

At the very least- open up the cover and mount the one you have with some slack in that hole- when you need it, just take off the cover and feed the harness you do have out through the hole. It will be nicely hidden when you are not using it. Cost? Couple of black tie wraps...

If I where to use this as it, the brake lights and turn signals would work?

If that one is wired in correctly, yes.

Was it a used truck, or did the dealer install it as an extra?

You are good to go then, I’d try hiding it behind the cover and use it that way through the hole, leaving it capped when you are not towing. Why spend extra money on it? You can get other cool add-ons for the same cost - window visors, bug shield, a good USB stick to put all your CD’s on for your truck, or a cubby organizer insert,etc....

Does that hitch mount to the bumper? If so be mindful to not exceed the tongue weight that the bumper can handle.

Should mount to the bumper with 2 bolts and 3-4 bolts to the frame rails (per side).

The dealership gave me this part and said they do not install it BUT can sell me the wiring harness? Anyhow Taco friends, how to I go about installing this into the slot in the bumper? Also I do not plan on towing anything EXTREME. Maybe a small trailer with a ATV or small boat IF that.

Sorry you didn’t mention having that part at the beginning of the post, would have helped and save some time.

Assuming the 4-pin plug that the dealer installed in your truck already works: You should be able to cut that plug off, and wire each of those 4 wires to the appropriate pins in the backside of the new factory plug. Pop out the blank, pop the new plug in. (you'll only have 4-pin function this way, you'd have to pull/tap some more wires to get all 7 pins functioning)

I think I would start looking for a different dealer to do service work. If they can't properly install a trailer harness, someone's not very knowledgeable of auto systems. That bumper plug should have been installed!
