My truck is making a clanking noise. :annoyed: I checked the belts, I checked the oil, anything that is visible and I can’t see where it’s come from. The check engine light and trac off light is on. Anyone have this problem? I took it to Toyota and it’s been in the shop since this morning. They don’t want to tell me what it is. So all they told me is that they ordered parts and they won’t come in til next week. So frustrating. Does anyone know if Toyota is supposed to give out a loaner since it’s still under warranty?

They should give you a loaner if they are keeping your truck

When would it make the clanking noise?

I know someone that might be having the same issue as you.

I went down Toyota yesterday, they finally gave me a loaner. My truck will be down for awhile:frusty: turned out it’s something to do with the crankshaft. So Toyota is just replacing the crankshaft and a few other parts! Shouldn’t they just change out the whole motor? Anyone know if I can get my money back? Would rather get a 2nd Gen Tacoma.

crankshaft replacement?? surely they must have found a major problem here. How can a clanking noise from an engine go right to a crank replacement. Since the engine is still turning...so how did they determine that crankshaft is at fault, is it a spun bearing or bearing wipe out. Did they drop the lube oil pan and found lots of metal pieces???OR see bearing wipeout.... If that's the case then I think a lots of us should be concerned. Its previously reported , people are finding metal in their lube oil change even after 5k interval. THIS CAN BE A BIG ISSUE!!! FOR ALL 2017 and maybe 2016

I think I'd change that "clanking" fan belt before I took it to the dealer.... You know they always replace the motor when that kind of clanking occurs... you will be without yer truck for at least 2 months...!! Ask them to throw in a 4.0 motor from the 2nd gen...!!

    Good luck.

I talked to one of the service department reps, and he said they put it on a machine and the codes that popped up was coming from the crankshaft. That’s all I know.

That may be the CKP. Crankshaft position sensor.
Do these trucks have knock sensors?

crankshaft position sensor makes more sense..... there is a recall on this for some 2016/17 model

"The worst case scenario would be a crankshaft sensor failure at speed, which could result in the engine quitting. Considering power assist for things like steering and brakes would disappear with an engine failure, Toyota identifies this condition as a safety risk, hence the recall."
