Only ever files and guides. But you have to file to the specs for the chain (as found on the chain box or online). Some are 25deg angle, some 30 or 35deg. And/or flat accross or 10deg up angle. Make sure the depth guages/drag links are filed at least every other tooth filing and to the correct depth. Also, round the depth guages when you get to see a couple of mm's of flat on their filing surface. Makes for a better, less chattery cut especially during bore cuts. If you're bore cutting and you start to chatter and bounce, you need to sharpen your chain.

I only use Oregon chains on Oregon bars (Husky saw), recently filed an Echo chain on a new Echo saw. Cheapest crap chain I ever saw. It's since been replaced with Oregon chain.

I've had Poulan (ugh), Pioneer (ugh...weight), and Husqvarna. The Huskies last, I like the nylon screen air filters too. But I'm thinking Stihl next, once the present Husky bites the dust...10 more years probably.

I could never get it right until I got the timberline sharpener. I used it with my small STIHL and bigger husky both cut better than when they were new. Get the right carbide for your saw. Pricey. Lots of videos to show how to use.

I've got a Stihl MS170, ran a 290 in the woods for years, the 170 is fine for small stuff, lacks a few features I was used to with the bigger saw. As much as I wanted to just buy a 440 I have absolutely zero use for a saw that big.

I use a husky 550xp 18" bar and a dolmar ps7900 24" bar. Use Oregon bar and chains for both

you guys who use chainsaws I have a question. I have an oak tree down and I am going to slice off slabs maybe 2-3 inches thick and am concerned how to condition them so they dry out but do not crack. What is the recommendation for this? Thanks

ECHO is a great saw for homeowner use but a STIHL can't be beat. 100% the best.

    yep..
I beg to differ. Not that STIHL may be the best, but Echo' s upper line are top notch and more than suitable for commercial work. I prefer my CS 590 over the farm boss. Just my opinion :p

Last time I was handling a 3120XP it had a 48" bar and we were clearing and cleaning up a golf course full of down weeping willow trees. That saw is bad ass!
