Sure! He can play around on parts of the trail. He doesn’t have to get into the more serious stuff. The Rubicon has many different levels of terrain available. It all depends on just how deep you go into the trail.

Late to the party so I didn't see the posts that got purged... but I gotta comment on this. We moved to northern Cali from Ohio in early 2016. Took a cross country trip in 2015, wound up in Humboldt, loved it, and got jobs and moved out here 8 months later. Sold our house and all our possessions back in Ohio and came out here with just what we could fit in my 4Runner and her Prius. 18 months in we are having a blast and loving it.

I think "native" Californians are often just jaded and too close to the project to appreciate the beauty of this place. There is truly no other state like it. Like otis, I have been to 49 of the 50 states, and California trumps them all. Of all the places I've visited, I only ever was inspired to pull up roots and start fresh in one place.

There are at least three books in Tony Huegel's "Byways" series for California: coast, Sierra, and desert. They are great for starting and as a reference for ideas ... in most of the public land which they cover, you'll soon find miles of other roads/trails of varying difficulty. If you're in the inner Bay Area, there's not much nearby and heavy traffic makes even weekend getaways painful. But if you're in the Central Valley, Sonoma or the foothills, or you just have more free time to get out, there's a lifetime of exploration in this state and it's pretty accessible.

Lots of mellow and pretty drives in those places.

Blackwood Canyon Trail in Tahoe is another great drive.

We used to live in Roseville 12 years ago, but we are moving back in a week, shoot us a PM, we know so good places, and it would be nice to start meeting new faces...
