Headlight restore that may actually work

I was at Wally World this afternoon and saw this Turtle Wax 'headlight restore' stuff on the shelf for $9. Replacing the headlight housings are a few hundred bux, so I figured it was worth a shot. My headlight were not too bad, but enough to bother me. Here is results after one coat and buff off of just the 1st step compound. It was getting dark so i took pics, will finish the process and post final results. But so far I am pretty impressed!

 

I will ask and want to see as well as many other.

In my experience the only fix is new lenses.

I've always read that the re-polish kits don't work, and yea I know that they take off the protective layer and need more regular maintenance. That said, I used the 3M polish kit on my lights 6 months ago and they still look great. If I have to touch them up every so often, then I'm OK with that. I picked up a new set of lights off of the market place, but so far I'm doing fine with refurbished originals.

 

The Sylvania kits work for about 18 or so months before starting to come off.

I'm glad you're headlights came out acceptably. Truth be told though, they didn't look too awfully bad to begin though with and that's a big factor in how well any "headlight lens restoration" kit works. As has already been stated, you'll have to keep after them with a good wax / synthetic sealant / coating with good UV protection to keep them in decent condition since any remaining factory UV protection has now been buffed off.

Truth be told, the best way to keep from ever having to use any restoration product on your headlights is to prevent the oxidation from happening in the first place. To do that, all one has to do is keep after them with a good wax / synthetic sealant / coating with good UV protection.

 

Excellent advice! Eventually, when I replace these housings (I'm sure I will at some point for some mod or another) I will do!

I used the same Turtle Wax kit as the OP on my daughters Corolla. The headlights came out and looked great for a while. A little bit over a year has past and they need to be done again. For the price of the kit, it's okay. I'm not complaining about having to redo them. Just stating that it's not a permanent fix. But I don't think anyone including the OP feels that way.

 

A coat or two of Clear coat paint after they are buffed out will protect better than wax or UV protectant.

 

Best and cheapest option I have ever done is a tube of cheap ol white toothpaste. Apply it with a little water and buff it out with paper towels. Rinse off residue. Shiny. Not even kidding. Takes 3 minutes. And lasts several months.
