So as a new owner of both a 2015 Taco and a white dog (Orion) that goes everywhere with me. He is the best dog ever but also sheds, I had to come up with a solution. I refuse to let the interior suffer the white doom of my previous vehicle due to his coarse white hair embedding into the carpet.

So I started by pulling out the interior, the seats, and the console to access the existing carpet.

After getting the carpet out, I tried three to four different methods of how to use the existing carpet but treated with a hardened surface.

I found that bedlining carpet would take numerous coats and days of drying each time to get coverage. I was not willing to go that route.

After a few different test methods...
    It finally came to me.

Use a heat gun to melt down the carpet fibers thus leaving a much less porous surface to work with.

I slowly worked a heat gun across the carpet until all the carpet fibers had pulled in and compressed. There was some slight shrinkage but nothing that cause any issues in the reinstallaction.

Next I used a good coat of rustoleum primer to give the bed liner something to hold onto. I used one can the entire mat. Let dry

After the primer was dry, I applied Rustoleum bed liner to the the vertical parts of the matting first and then across the floorboard parts as directed. I used a paint brush but I'm sure the roller may give you a more consistent texture throughout. After 30 minutes I applied second coat and left it to dry overnight.

With my situation battling dog hair, the Rust-Oleum bed liner was to grabby. I decided to do a heavy coat of Rustoleum enamel high gloss spray paint. Let it dry.

I followed that with 4 coats of Rust-Oleum triple thick glaze which gave the grip/smoothness I liked.

Overall the project turned out great and my interior is just shy of bulletproof now. Everything went back together without any issue and no modifications were needed.

Hope this is helpful to some of you other members that have considered getting your interior done but price shock prevented you from doing it.

    Cheers

    Interesting.

I hope to just swap in rubber flooring like some work truck models have.

Not because of dog, but sand/water.

    Nice work!!!
How wou I'd you rate the modded carpets ability to soak up water vs the before mod carpet? Like if your truck were full of water from wheeling through a pond and you drained it lol, instead of pulling yourseats/carpet each time to dry without smelling like pond/ass? Trying to simulate the rubberized OEM liner that is $$ and hard to get.

The only drawback i see is if you get any mud in it, it’ll be a bitch to clean.

OP you could have just bought the Toyota rubber flooring. And I would have been so happy to have bought your black carpet from you. It pains me to see this as I've been watching the for sale threads for so long hoping a nice carpet would get posted :frusty:

Cool solution, but Toyota does offer a factory rubber floor replacement that is not very expensive. Something to consider if this solution doesn't hold up to use over time.

It is definitely waterproof from the top side. My goal was to keep all the sound deadening that is part of the underside of the factory carpet.

As far as being completely flooded out the only concern would be if water was able to get under the modified carpet.

Sometimes it's more fun to do it yourself than buy a rubber mat. Also the way it looks and turned out is awesome in my opinion.

Putting the heavy coats of clear on it made it to where it pretty much wiped clean. It's very similar to the factory bed liner that comes in the back of the Tacoma now

Interesting solution. I tried this Berliner approach on some scratched up vinyl interior parts of my previous car, but getting good adherence to the plastic was tough, even after sanding and adhesion promoter.

Primer spray paint helped for me. It held great, I used all Rustoleum products as well.

How is it holding up? I actually have an extra carpet assembly I would like to try on. I had a juice spill, long story short I bought a new carpet when I had no reason to.

don't they make a factory rubber version of this as an option that can be bought separately
to also make the floor able to be washed out with hose water
