How often do you guys get up near the redline when shifting? I ask because it seems when I go from 3rd to 4th the RPMs shoot through the roof. Am I being too aggressive with the gas? Trying to learn how to drive a manual without anyone to teach me has been, well, ugly to say the least. I don't want to cause any damage to the truck.

With normal driving, you don't get near redline. I only do it (rarely) when taking off and and I need to get to speed asap. My normal driving (01 v6 MT) has me shifting around 2k-2.5k rpm. Rpm's shouldn't shoot through the roof going between ANY gear- unless your foot is on the gas. Find some ol'boy in your neighborhood and ask him to teach ya. Maybe buy him lunch for his troubles. It's not rocket science, but there is an art to doing it right.

Yeah it sounds like your footwork is off a bit - either still on the gas when pushing the clutch in, or giving it too much gas/too early when letting it out in the next gear.
I don't know about the 4cyl, but the V6 M/T does have a couple of things that make it more difficult to drive than a typical manual transmission - Throttle delay/power delivery weirdness and a hydraulic accumulator on the clutch mechanism.

Anyway, there are several decent tutorial videos on youtube WRT manual transmission driving - I agree with Greeny though, nothing like another driver to teach ya.

Thanks, I think I must not be off the gas completely when I shift. I'll pay more attention to it next time I'm out.

I have been reading on here for a couple hours over the weekend and so far still haven't found a fix to that hesitation at lower RPMs. I had a MT in my 2006 with the 4.0L and while I didn't like the 'clunky' feel to the trans, I do not like the hesitation.

Recently at an intersection someone was coming faster than I thought and I had to punch it. Well luckily the other car saw I wasn't really moving and slammed on it's brakes. If I have my 2006 I would have gotten through that situation a little better and since I was in a crazy crash in my 2006 it gives me quite the anxiety knowing this thing doesn't have the nuts to get going right off the bat. Pulling onto the highway on certain exits is also scary.

Would really hope there is some sort of fix to this because I really love this truck but I don't think I could get used to this hesitation with the MT.

You have the V6, right? I have the 4cyl and it's hasn't shown any hesitation. Is this one of those V6 problems? Not trying to be snobbish, I'm new to manual transmissions and I have enough problems shifting that hesitation could cause a wreck.

Congrats on your SR MT, I have driven stick for the better part of 10yrs and I will say that our trucks are not very forgiving when compared to other vehicles.
I think it's a combination of limited 4cyl power and the clutch accumulator that makes the truck very hard to clutch smoothly and naturally. Being experienced, I can adapt but it is not the ideal platform to learn on unfortunately.

Mine doesn't have hesitation, but there is a bit of throttle lag. Once it goes, it goes ... but there is certainly an uncomfortable wait if you're in a situation where reaction time is important. Perhaps the ambiguity of "hesitation" is crossing us up?

Granted I only have about 730 miles on my '17 DCSB OR MT6, but I'm not feeling a hesitation/stumble or whatever it is. I have felt the small fly by wire delay between the pedal and throttle body on day one. Maybe this is what everyone is talking about?
However, I have found that just giving it the go pedal a quick tap to get the RPMs up to 2.5k, and then before the rev hang begins to drop, I work the 3rd pedal into the game, and we're off smoothly.

Before I ever drove one of these Taco's with the 6spd MTs, where 5th and 6th being both OD gears, I was wondering why Toyota didn't make 1-5 normal gears, and 5th being 1:1, and 6th being the OD gear. Now that I have a month of driving it, mostly to and from work on the back roads, and in town here is where I am at with that.

I find if I need/want to just to get a move on and start rowing gears like a mad man, I do that. MPGs will suffer, but it works and works really well.
Now, normally when I'm in no hurry at all and want to see what I an do to improve the MPGs, I get going off the line up to about 2-2.5k rpms, and then shift. I keep doing this until I am at 40 mph and in 5th gear, rolling about 2k rpm. Then when I have the room on a straight away, I can bump to 6th anywhere above 50 but below 60 and maintain less than 2k rpms. The truck is super smooth between the gears and I don't feel that 5th needs to be 1:1 any longer.

It's weird, but other than the tall reverse gear ratio, I honestly feel that the 6 forward gears are just about perfect for this motor. At this point I don't feel I need a pedal commander, or different tune on the motor. We'll see if that changes if and when the motor breaks in.

I have realistic expectations regarding these new fangled trucks with fly by wire go pedal, heavier curb weight, HP and TQ curves than my gen 1, and obviously not expecting V8 or sports car performance.

    McLov'in it!

This pretty much describes my experience as well. I think it helps that I've been driving various manual transmissions since I was about 6 yo (farm boy) Many of them were VERY unforgiving. This one is a peach!

One of my favorites from back in the day, incidentally, was a 4 speed in a 2 cylinder 1950s John Deere (big ass cylinders the size of my head at the time) 4th gear was o/d gear basically and it hauled ass!!

congrats on your new MT truck!

that OV tune whoever is talking about unleashed a lot of capability, performance, and driveability in my truck. in fact, i tested a file that wasn't suitable for on road use due to the excessive throttle & torque response. now I'm running the normal file. that motor can move the thing like crazy, and let me tell you it's tons o fun in the MT.

I only use 6th above 65mph. I'll use 5th to accelerate lightly and pull some small hills.

I hardly ever use 5th Gear at all, on the upshift I go from 4th to 6th.
