Is it a good idea to put your trans in neutral when you come to a stop sign or red light?

I was told that it is easier on the transmission instead of leaving it in drive.

Leave it in drive. They are engineered to remain in drive whilst driving and you also bring up a slew of safety concerns if you slip it into neutral... To include just rolling around should you get rear ended.

Yup , as Memario has listed .....stay in drive with your foot on the brake . You have the torque converter to thank for this . Its the fluid coupling between the engine and transmission . When you drop into neutral , you put excessive loading on the transmission as well as the differential and driveshaft when you put the transmission back into drive from a stopped position .
Forward to reverse is also a big issue it seems . If you come to a complete stop before changing from forward to reverse you will keep your truck rolling for a much longer time . Skipping out on this step causes some nasty damage
