Hey guys I have a 2017 SR5 and picked up some 2017 TRD OFF Road shock and coils for super cheap and I want to install them in my SR5. I have tried to research this and I know the TRD Off Road suspension Bilsteins are softer than the TRD Sport tuned shocks but I can't find anything comparing a regular stock Tacoma suspension to the TRD Off Road suspension. Has anyone switched their SR5 suspension out for Off Road or even Bilstein HDs? Or does anyone know how they will differ in ride quality? Thanks in advance!!!

I drove all 3 at the dealer and IMO the sport and sr5 felt the same with the off-road feeling softer overall. This was strictly in road driving with the exception of the off road where I drove it through a delapidated parking lot and was exceptionally smooth through the pot hole filled pavement!

OR will ride softer to put it simply.

Awesome, that makes me feel good about the install. I think the SR5 suspension is pretty rough and a softer ride is what I want. Thanks man...:thumbsup:

The SR5 feels stiffer when new but softens up after about 5-6000 miles. DUring my rear diff recall I had an SR5 AC and I thought it rode like a wagon. I put 120 lbs of sand in the rear just to smooth it out.

I put 5100s on the rear of my DCLB only and they feel like they have more damping on slow-speed hits. On fast bumps ( like crack in the road) are about as soft. Really nice. I'll probably go all 5100's after the holidays.

Sports are definitely stiffer all around than the SR5 even after 20k miles. My buddy's DCLB Sport isn't as comfortable as my DCLB SR5. I do have a camper shell on and that really made the rear ride nice. Before, it was stiff and annoying.

I wish I could drive an OR so I can see the diff.

I saw in a post one time with all three shocks side by side. The Sport shock has the biggest diameter. The OR and normal shock are about the same but the Billstein is softer.

Do you know if the Off Road coils differ from a regular SR5 Tacoma?

Gotcha...but what about the coil itself? Is the coil from a TRD Off Road Tacoma stiffer or thicker or more heavy duty? Or is it the same coil that comes on a regular SR5 Tacoma and TRD Sport Taco?

I have seen posts ( only a couple) stating the OFFROAD Coil Springs are progressive coils and the rest are linear. But that has sounded more anecdotal than a statement of fact. When looking at the OFFROAD suspensions in the for sale section, none of them look progressive to me so I don't really know.

If you're asking me...no. My truck was involved in a hit and run and was totaled over Christmas.

Hi. I am jumping on this older thread because I have an sr5 and am about to purchase some OR bilsteins. How did this swap work out for you? How is the ride quality?

I cannot speak to the Bilsteins on ORs but I prefer the ride in my DCLB SR5 w/ 5100s over factory. I put taller coils & AALs on simultaneously but the coil rates are the same as factory ones.

All i can say is my buddies 2019 trd rides more compliant than my 2020 sr5 which rides a bit harsher, and seems to have less rebound damping in its shocks. That said, i'd still take my trucks overall performance against his any day.

I just switched from stock OR bilsteins to a Toytec setup but thought the stocks were super smooth and absorbed the bumps great and even off road. I would hit speed bumps to test it and it felt like it absorbed and rebounded great. Front end dive was worse with stock. The Toytec seem more harsh mostly in the back with the AAL. If you are looking for a stock OR setup, PM me.

The stock OR suspension will also induce major brake dive in stop and go traffic. My wife hated it, we ride FOX now.
