First snow since getting my 017 Tacoma trd sport, I noticed a grinding sound and slight vibration in gas pedal whenever my rear tires slipped while in 2wd. I read a few threads where this was thought to be caused by ABS, VSC, or limited slip Differential, but none of the threads explained, "why" each mechanism, may or may not, cause the noise/vibration. Does anyone have any mechanical insight that can explain what the root cause of this noise/vibration is?

it's normal and i'm pretty positive it's applying brakes to one whichever wheel is spinning so it has more traction, the real fun starts when you turn all of that off :D

That's the normal sound of VSC. How does it work on our Tacomas?
It starts with the wheel speed sensor. When a sensor detects slip, it signals the brake system (not ABS) to brake the spinning wheel, allowing torque to go towards the wheel with traction. The "grinding" sound is not grinding at all. It is the ABS valve opening and closing very fast (hundreds of times a second) and that is also the vibration in the throttle and brake pedal. In addition, the throttle can be cut if both wheels detect slip and you continue to apply throttle. So you can also sense a loss of power if you continue to spin. It's all in the owner's manual.

Thank You, never encountered this with my 2011 so it caught me off guard when I heard it for the first time. I was in the middle of plowing snow so I did not look at the manual, and I noticed that when I put it into 4wd the (non) issue disappeared . Thank you for the detailed explanation. I was more afraid that I was causing damage.

You should try a TRD Off Road with crawl control...

    That sounds terrible..lol

    It is what it is.

Now that I understand it better I'm ok, just came from a 2011 so this caught me off guard in the middle of plowing our first storm of the year

That or the TRD OR "hill assist". It's terrible. My previous car, it would just hold the brakes on a hill for you until you gave it gas, no weird noises.
