I was the one that said chain all four but if there is no room up there then obviously he can't. If they fit it's not a bad idea to chain the front as well.

I think you made the right choice in flying though - that's a great deal - just too much nonsense about the snow in here - my frikin grandmother never got in an accident in the winter and she is the worst driver I know :D

I laughed at @jbrandt's comment about 4x4's off in ditches though. My first time to Alpine Meadows after moving out west there were at least 4 vehicles (suv's mostly) off of the road after 4 inches of snow - not even mixed precipitation which can really make things slick. Hard to blame people though. Growing up in a northern place it's just a part of growing up - I had a couple friends end up in ditches when we were teens - even a teacher - luckily she was alright, but not gonna lie I was hoping there would be no algebra that day...

Not sure there was really all that much conflicting advise. The general theme is just to drive slow, that’s pretty much it. Whether or not you “need” 4x4 or not, or whether you use chains or cables is superfluous.

Anywhere you fly, though, you’ll still need to rent a car/truck, so you still need to know how to drive in the snow. Unless a friend picks you up at the airport...

Hopefully up there, anything you rent would have studded tires, which would be a nice bonus, but I don’t know if rental places do that, you know, because that would actually make sense.

The most important thing, however, is to load up on ski bunnies and whiskey, and have a great weekend. Maybe do some skiing, too.

I've never seen a rental car with studs... but 4x4 is well worth the extra money if there is a snow event, and even for peace of mind.

Gotta love it. Tacomaworld, where you might find a guy to plow a mountain for you.

A few bags of kitty litter in the back for weight can also be spread on ice to get some traction if someone is stuck.
