Well, when the husky was brand new the guy paid $10,500 with all the taxes, fees and reg (it’s street legal) but I paid about half that because it had a shifting issue I have winced rectified with $100 in parts .
That mtb costs more than that? One of my first jobs was working part time at a local bike shop and to the best of my knowledge I don’t remember seeing them over $6000.

Did the "power" mods actually make any difference? Just curious how much they could do on an 8hp stock engine... Looks like a total riot, though.

These things are built super solid. I've seen it in person before, but this will be the first time I will have a pair of bikes on it.

Shameless plug about "the little guy" : The cool part about it is this guy started building them in his garage last year, and got assistance from the University of Utah MEP Center so his operation is pretty legit now. Cam Zink actually bolted a modified one to his razor for Rampage this year.

One major difference pointed out between this and a recon rack is the baskets and wheel straps are actually adjustable on the bar for spacing between bikes. It also is modular. It is still in the "beta" phase, but there is like a bolt on table attachment. When your bikes are off, you can drop the table for a little lunch spot, etc. They even built a moto deck that bolts between the upright and the truck, so you can take ALL your bikes.

2 issues I have noted so far, but will might be remedied as he gets the operation rolling commercially:

    1. he makes 3 size baskets for regular, plus, and fat bikes. it comes standard with 4 regular plus 2 baskets of your choosing. 2 issues with this: depending on your friends bike setups, it isn't as universal as a recon rack which just uses the same basket for everything, and you may run into compatibility issues unless you buy more baskets. The more specific baskets do fit the tires a little more securely, but then again, I haven't heard a lot of complaints about the universal recon baskets...

    2. So far it is only available in a 6 bike size. Sure you could take off some baskets, but it'll be interesting to see the width as compared to the tacoma's profile.. If you are shuttling, that's no real worry, but if you go on road trips with it, tacomas only have 4 real seats max, and some of that area is probably taken up with gear. I believe he said that additional sizes will be offered eventually. I told him worst case, I could take an angle grinder to mine and adjust the width. :sawzall::welder:

Sadly yes, mountain bikes can cost that much. Lots of top speced bikes are $9,000 to 10,000 mark or more.

Gonna ask a stupid question. What the possible hell could make something with 2 wheels and no motor cost over 10 grand?

Ok. Tracking now. To each his own. If I pay that much for something, it better be full auto or I better be able to drive it, gas powered that is.

    also: Market Demand

Its bananas, but people still pay it. I bought it used so it was a lot more palatable, but replacement cost for that bike posted is just shy of 10K.

I have seen some of them. We had a military aid tent last year at the Butte 100. Some of the stuff that came through there and the people I talked to. Unbelievable. I remember this older couple came through on a tandem mountain bike. Asked him what it cost after talking to him a bit, all he did was smile, shake his head, and said you don't wanna know.

I used to think people were crazy to spend $1K on a bike. Now our 4 bikes, road and mtn for my wife and me, 3 of them carbon, added up to well over $10K. We are lucky to have great roads and single track accessible from our house, so we ride A LOT. We ride public land, so no lift tickets or park fees, and usually camp when we ride out of the area. Compared to skiing or even motorcycles (I have 3 in my garage) it doesn't have to be an expensive sport, though the cost of entry -and obsolescence - is high. Though we did wait to get these bikes until our kids were out of college ... I suspect most of you here are 2-3 decades younger than us.

I justify the cost by the enjoyment I get out of it.

I have a $6000 mountain bike and a $10,000 Harley. Nobody bats an eye at a $10,000 motorcycle, but yet I ride it less often and get less overall enjoyment out of it, so why not spend money on the things I enjoy doing more?

I also think MTB is a sport where people seem to demand the best of the best technology. Most amateur MTB riders are nowadays running bikes that are comparable to professional race team setups. Whereas a guy running a stock Yamaha 450 dirtbike is not anywhere close to the money that goes into a pro-level rig.

Same here, yes it is expensive, but I can never think of a time I regretted riding my bike!

Even the weekend I ended up in the hospital with 3 broken ribs and some stitches after riding "Ribbon" in Grand Junction, the trip was totally worth it!

This thing looks soooo freaking rad! Does he have an estimated cost? I'm thinking a group buy might need to take place..?
