    Howdy,

So I have been using a 2012 2.7L for work which requires that I idle a lot and Im sick and tired of breathing in fumes so I need to fix this + angry customers who dont want to breath it either. The truck has about 160k and is going strong but lacks power (maybe just because im coming from a 1GRFE) but is awfully slow. Exhaust smells like unburnt fuel but no CEL or other easy indications. I have already done plugs, ran techron cleaner, new gas cap, cleaned the MAF, changed the air filter, and cleaned the throttle body all to try and lean out the engine and make sure there is full combustion. Is there anything Im not thinking of? Or do the 2.7s just smell like crap all the time, my 4.0 doesnt have this except of course on cold starts. Thanks in advance!

If it smells like sulfur/rotten eggs then it's your cats

If it is the usual old worn engine smell, then there might not be much you can do. My truck has the same
mileage on it, and it smells pretty bad. Really stinks up the garage before I back out.
I'm meticulous in maintaining it, and has real good compression (over 180 in all cylinders)
and it runs like new, so I live with it.

If you have a sulfur/rotten egg smell, that could also be caused by a faulty alternator overcharging a lead/acid battery.
Been there, done that (about 20 years ago).
Measure the battery voltage while the truck idling.
Should be about 13.3 thru 14.7 volts. (mine had measured 21 volts due to faulty regulator)

Update: Truck wasn't starting so I threw a new battery in and it's miles better with the idling when warm smell. Still has the old truck smell but nothing too egregious. My guess is low voltage getting to the plugs maybe incomplete ignition. Thanks for the replies, hopefully will fly through the smog test :)
