I have had this issue since I have owned the truck (new) (Feb 2017). Seems to be more noticeable when warming up. The truck jumps in RPM's 100-175 when backing up or moving forward slowly. It "surges" and lunges forward -or reverse. Not a safe situation on dry pavement , much less on a slick driveway or street.
Yesterday it was looked at by the Toyota area rep (Kent). He very quickly noticed it was synchronized with any movement of the steering wheel. I guess that any input from the power steering pump triggers a uptick in RPM.
Today I got in a brand new 17 and did a comparison -- sure enough there is a SLIGHT bump in the RPM, but I would guess only about 50-75. Barely noticeable!
Now we know the problem -- lets see what Toyota will do for my truck especially now that we know the "cause" .
My guess -- it has to be something to do with the PS pump or the control computer?
It is great they (Toyota) have good people out there helping with troublesome issues

    I'm not sure I'd call 100 RPM a surge.

I drove a Crown Vic once that had a vacuum leak. While at a red light with my foot on the brake that car would randomly lurch forward after the engine would rev on its own. No amount of braking prevented it

    That, is a surge.

"Call" it whatever you want - Toyota and my dealer thought it was bad enough to have an area rep drive here 150+ miles to check it out and he agreed it was a surge! And if you enjoy driving in vehicles like the lurching "crown vic " --so be it --just keep away from me and mine. Also I said 100-175 RPM if you read the post!

Any load on the engine will cause a bump in rpm, whether it's steering or AC (defrost), so ya you'll see a slight bump in rpm as you put load on the alternator as you add additional load on amperage using extra accessories.

I understand -- but like I said--why one is hardly noticeable and mine you have to push harder on the Brake to not let it jump forward or backward.

No different than the 2nd Gen I had. I've learned to adjust.

I don't "adjust" to something that is not right. I will get this fixed thank-you!

Good luck. There is no adjustment other than push harder on brake, just like 2nd Gen, but if you find one, post here, you will be the first!

My buddy said his 2015 F150 ecoboost does the same thing. He swears up and down it’s dangerous as hell but ford hasn’t figured it out either... not apples to apples but it happens.

Mine does this too. I doubt that there is a fix as it is caused by an increased load on the engine from the power steering pump.

The reason the ECU upticks idle speed with PS or A.C. load is to prevent stalling.

At 100-150 rpm change, it will be interesting to hear what the reps solution is.

There is some kind of difference from my truck to the brand new one I got into, to see how it did-(very very slight change in RPM on the new one) If all of the Tacomas were as bad as mine --I can guarantee you there would be a whole lot of unhappy customers. The difference has to be in the PS pump or whatever ups the idle (main control computer I assume). But that's for Toyota for to decide. They have 26 months or 26000 miles to figure it out, and I won't quit till they do! This truck could possibly loose traction on a icy driveway and crash into something.

    Good luck.

This was one of the issues I had (before I sold it). They will send a rep out, then say "it's a normal characteristic of the vehicle".

Maybe you'll get lucky and they replace components and make it less noticeable, but Toyota seems to have spent exactly 0 hours giving fucks about any oddities the driver would experience with this truck.

The brake pedal buzzing is another great example of that. "Oh it's normal for your brakes to bzzzzt when you press it!". No, it's not. No other healthy vehicle has even done that, but hey...it works for Toyota, so Toyota doesn't care. They replaced that entire brake booster assembly for me and it helped, but it's just engineered poorly so you'll feel it.

So, I would level set your expectations about adjusting to the truck if you plan on continued ownership. I couldn't adjust to the truck(i agree that you shouldn't have to adjust to things that aren't right) so I unloaded it and couldn't be happier.

Threads like these just reinforce my decision.

I hope you get a great dealership and field tech thY sort you out, but to quote the great Gimli: Don't trust to hope. It has forsaken these lands.

I was backing into an area today to dump some left-over wood trash after splitting wood. There were a couple of moderate ditches of which I would not want to drop into - "ole-jerky" (my truck" ) was reving the rpms as I was backing (and steering). I thought to myself --now if this was someone who was creeping over some rocks or along a deep drop-off -with poor footing --that person would want to throw this truck back at the dealer. In other words this could be dangerous in some situations.

I have the same "problem" but once the truck warms up for about a minute it goes away. Just don't drive it cold, or if you have to, use more brakes... Problem solved.
