I desperately want to like my "new" truck but this rear end howl, low pressure fuel pump hum (audible at highway speeds), HPFP chirp and numerous window and dash rattles make it tough. Drive line slop and the axle wrap make starts and stops annoying to boot. I'm not picky but they had their heads up their a** when they put mine together. Corporate and dealerships have been no help. My first and probably last taco :(

Update for me: Toyota has bought my truck back. I filed Lemon back in January after the attempted to fix my howling diff multiple times. Couple that with the fuel pump chirps, the terrible throttle response, the drive live vibes, the hanging tach, occasional "Brake Failure, See Dealer" messages and the constant low rpm miss fires, I jumped when they called me saying they would buy it back. Hopefully you guys get a solution to the problem, but I wouldnt hold my breath.

There literally isnt a truck on the market right now that would fit my criteria. The closes was the Taco, and it failed me in quality. So I went and found an old 7.3 F250 that I paid cash for using the "Equity" in my truck. Plus I still have my beater 89 Toyota PU as well.

At first they said they werent going to do anything for me and would fight me in court over it. I let it rest because I would lose more $ in court than I would trading it after the depreciation curve flattened out. But then out of nowhere, they sent me a letter, and I jumped on it as soon as I could. Toyota did pay me a very reasonable amount for the truck, that I cant knock them for.

My 2017 does this and what that guy a few posts back said about “Once you hear it you can’t not hear it” is the absolute truth

Ever since I loaded about 160-200lbs total worth of water softener salt bags in the truck bed over each tire for winter the howling as completely disappeared

Quick follow up on the 2018 DCLB

    1. Immediately noticed the vehicle was much quieter....far less road/engine noise than my 2016. The overall road noise of the 2016 never bothered me since it was a truck, but the quiet in the 2018 is nice.

    2. The new safety features are cool...specifically the radar enhanced cruise control which maintains the distance between the car in front of you....works great.....no more hitting up or down on the cc!

    3. So far no rearend noises at all.....it's nice that have that gone, but I'm cautiously optimistic at the moment as the whine did not start until about 1500 miles on my 2016

    4. The new black chrome grill on the sport looks great! No more big chrome front end

    5. The shifting is much better.....my 2016 had tsb applied for shifting but I didn’t realize how bad it really was until I was in the 2018 and they have definitely smoothed out the transmission

So....if I get to 2k miles without any rearend whine I'll be very pleased with the decision to trade, if the whine returns I'm not sure what I'll do....but it probably won't involve owning a Tacoma.

It will be interesting to see when people start tearing into the 2018's for mods and such why this is. Maybe there is more factory sound deadening?

My first thought was exactly you indicate....Toyota took care of some of the problematic noises by deadening them?

New tires will help with road noise too..:new tires on the 2018 but the 2016 tires had some miles on them

The Howling Rear Diff is not from the tires, but i agree that new ones can cut some road noise.

Understand new tires may reduce a little noise.....but my 2016 was noisy from day one....always sounded like a truck.....2018 sounds a bit more like a car?? Who knows, but as long as the rear doesn't howl I'll be OK even with some normal road noise

I have been sitting at the dealer for 6 hrs now. They have been inspecting & repairing a number of items on my truck. They will not make a work order on my howling rear end. I was told they are no longer attempting any fixes to remove the howl as it is now a normal sound for 3rd gens(they have swapped the whole carrier assembly 2x this year). They want to give me a rental and have the toyota engineer inspect my truck. I believe they just don't want to mess with the rear end a 3rd time because it will fall under lemon law.

Take a selfie with you and the service manager. Also, video them saying they won’t do a service order. Or, when you go to sign your paperwork write on the paperwork dealer would not address howling rear differential. Just because they don’t open up a work order does not mean they can avoid LL process. If you go and they refuse it still counts as a failed attempt.

Just learned I am going to be doing a 4 hour round trip drive 2 days a week for the next three years...at about 50-65 mph. I've found the noise to make the truck un-drivable and now I am hearing Toyota won't fix it...So bad.

Its funny but as been mentioned several times in this Thread, once you hear the Howling it is impossible to unhear it, having a 4 hour drive a couple days a week would be quite unbearable.

I am seriously considering what to do. I just went to Ford's website but I can't afford that. I need reliability, snow-capable, and really like the truck bed. I considered upgrading my sound system but I may just want some silence on a trip down the mountain. I feel trapped almost. I really dislike driving this truck on the highway; unfortunately for me the highway comprises 90% of my driving.

Trapped in a loveless marriage. I think given the chance I would sell this truck back to Toyota at a slight loss.

What's funny is on my local craigslist, there is a short-bed version of my OR-DCLB with 10k more miles than me, listed for $500 more than I paid for my truck 2 years ago.
