Looking for a replacement laptop, currently have a Mid-2012 MBP and it's taken good care of me (got me through college) but it's starting to slow down and as I start to edit videos more often.
Here are the specs for my current MBP.
    Screen Shot 2017-12-25 at 16.49.59.jpg

I want something that will do as well if not a little better for editing videos (I use gopro software but may get final cut pro) as well as handling all of the research that I do via safari.

Edit: I also forgot to mention my MBP randomly shuts down and occasionally gets a bunch of pixels across the screen and then shuts down

I use a Mac at work and a PC at home, because - money. I'd rather have a Mac for home too, but I simply can't justify the cost. Cost aside I wouldn't buy any MacBook computers right now. Apple has completely lost its way when it comes to the power user, and if you are planning on editing video, you are a power user. The latest MacBook pro has a stupid touch slider that is nothing but a gimmick. But, and this is a huge deal IMO there are no ports other than a couple of USB C. Watch this video from one of the Apple design engineers - ;)

Well, maybe not a real apple employee, but he nails my sentiment exactly.

Before I buy my next work laptop I'm waiting to see if Apple pulls its head out of its ass and introduces a decent power users MacBook. If not, maybe I'll go with a PC. (not likely given the number of Apple fanboys that I work with, but that's another story.)

If you're looking around for a PC laptop the single most important option IMHO is getting one with a solid state drive. That one thing will make even a low end laptop faster than a high end computer with a spinning drive. Another thing to be careful of when buying a PC from a place like BestBuy is make sure you are buying a current generation processor. I'v seen 3 generation old systems selling for the same price as the current gen for the same cost. Buyer beware. I've sent a bunch of people to Costco for laptops because they don't play the games like bestbuy and their competitors do.

As for brand on PC's they are all the same, pick one that has the features you want.

for video editing you'll need a bunch of RAM (Memory), make sure your next computer has at least 16GB and an SSD, Most higher end computers nowadays come with SSD (Solid State drive).
I've always been a Mac guy but i'm not impressed with the new MBPs especially since you need USB type c adapters and hubs.

Was always a Apple fan have had numerous Iphones not sure i'd ever change the phone. BUT my first MacBook was an AIR purchased in 11 started failing because of "lack of ram" only explanation or solution was ram ''maybe able to be sautered into hard drive" apparently that process is much easier said than done. As no one was willing to try or didn't know how to.. SO instead of being completely screwed I sold it for parts and atleast got a couple $100

Consider how far you are into iCloud and the whole Apple infrastructure. That being said I don't have issues with Windows 10. Full disclosure, I just made the jump to IOS from Android.

I've worked in IT for almost 20 years, with both PCs and Macs, so I have experience with both. My personal choice is and always will be PC, but they both have merit and it comes down to personal choice and what you are most used to.

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm going to start looking into building a desktop to get the video performance and HDD capacity I'll probably end up needing.

For a desktop build by how much does a typical I-7 outperform a typical I-5? I think I want to use intel chips but I know AMD is much more budget friendly, I just haven't kept up with AMD's offerings.

Awesome, I'll have to check out AMD's offering, do they have a chip that is close to the performance of a high end I5 Chip?

Just keep in mind what software you want to run. I'm more of a fan of PCs but I want Final Cut Pro on Mac versus the comparable ish Adobe software for PC. If I could run Final Cut on PC I would hands down buy/build a new PC

    Cool
Newegg has this, I feel like it would be a good combo (I'm gonna check and see what ports are on the MOBO.

I have only used Picasa (For photos) and go pro studio for videos, I may get better software in the future but as of right now I don't have a preference and I'm also not doing it professionally.

I thought the same thing until I got my drone and started editing a lot more. I can get the Final Cut Pro and like 4 of the other professional level applications with my old student email for $200 instead of the $300 per product so that's also why I'm going Mac. Sounds like you should probably go PC for what you want to do

a DJI phantom 3 Pro is the only reason I edit videos  I had absolutely no interest in it until I started flying.
This was my first "big" (more than 20 seconds) video that I edited, still learning how to fly and edit.
