Does anyone know if the spring from a standard travel Icon 2.5" coilover can be removed by turning the collar all the way loose?

I'm contemplating rebuilding a set of Icon's, but am not sure what the best way of removing the spring is. They collars are currently set ~2" in, and i'm worried that a spring compressor will need to put extreme compression on the spring to get tension out of it. Would it be better to loosen the collar, and if so is it possible to eliminate the need for a spring compressor?

Hope this makes sense and would be interested in hearing what others have done.

    Thanks!

I was not able to. It still requires compressing the coils and the “auto zone” rental compressors don’t fit very well.

    Thanks for the tips.
Check out what I just rented from autozone. Apparently they are just getting them in as it is a new product. I’m the first one to rent this one.

    Hopefully this does the trick.
Ideally I’d want to take the spring off without even messing with the collars, but doubt that is going to be possible. The collars are super difficult to turn.

I’m not sure if there is a capable shop around here that has the proper compressor, but I kinda wish I had. I put some gouges on the shock body and the paint on the coil took a hit.

...but I got the satisfaction that I did it myself.

*Cracks knuckles* Where do I begin?
What size springs did you get? I've called ICON several times and I've searched everywhere to find the exact size I need to replace my springs.

    No.

I got the springs off, but you won't be able to (safely) put them back on. The spring doesn't line up well with the angle of the plates of the compressor and wanted to slip when compression was applied. I wouldn't dare use it and took it to a shop to get them put back on.
